Six voices built i-dle; five carry it now
The easiest bad summary of i-dle is “Soyeon writes the songs.” Soyeon’s leadership is central, but a production credit cannot sing six histories or explain how five women rebuilt after losing one of the group’s defining performers. The original chemistry included Soojin. The current chemistry survives without pretending that history never happened.
Miyeon: melodic finish

2018: “LATATA,” “HANN,” and nine rookie awards
i-dle debuted as six members on May 2, 2018 with the EP I Am and “LATATA,” written and co-produced by Soyeon. The single gave the group an immediate identity: a memorable rhythmic hook, voices that remained distinguishable, and a debut that did not sound like a temporary placeholder while the company searched for a concept.

2019: genre tests and Queendom
I Made, “Senorita,” and “Uh-Oh” tested how far the group could move without losing its center. “Senorita” used Latin-pop references; “Uh-Oh” leaned into boom-bap attitude. On Mnet’s Queendom, the group’s performance of “LION” became a turning point because it treated a competition stage like a complete political fantasy instead of an enlarged music-show set.

2020: I Trust, “Oh my god,” and global visibility
I Trust and “Oh my god” pushed the group into darker religious and psychological imagery. 2021: I Burn, “HWAA,” and the Soojin fracture
I Burn and “HWAA” delivered one of the group’s most cohesive eras, using winter, fire, flowers, and separation across music and visual design. Later in 2021, allegations involving Soojin led to a hiatus and Cube announced her departure in August.
This is not a disposable footnote. Losing a member changed choreography, line distribution, fan trust, archival viewing, and the public meaning of the group’s earlier work. The current group is five members. The pre-2021 catalog still contains six. Both facts belong in an honest profile.
2022: “TOMBOY” and the five-member reset
I Never Die did not quietly resume the career. “TOMBOY” arrived as a loud refusal to make the group smaller, safer, or more apologetic. The track’s blunt English drew criticism, but the attitude, arrangement, and timing made it a cultural reset.
“Nxde” followed by using Marilyn Monroe, art references, sexualization, and the public gaze as material. The group’s satire is not always subtle, but subtlety was not the job. The job was to control the framing before somebody else did.
2023–2024: “Queencard,” 2, and scale
“Queencard” turned body-image anxiety and deliberately silly confidence into a giant hook. HEAT expanded English-language material. In 2024, the album 2 opened with “Super Lady,” while “Fate” demonstrated that the public could choose a different song from the promotional plan and give a B-side its own chart life.
I SWAY and “Klaxon” continued the summer-pop lane. By this point the group was no longer proving it could survive a crisis. It was managing the more complicated problem of remaining recognizable while success made every release a referendum.
2025: contract continuity and the i-dle name
All five members renewed with Cube, removing the immediate fear that the seventh-year mark would dissolve the team. On the group’s seventh anniversary, the official English styling shifted from (G)I-DLE to i-dle. The change placed the current identity first and removed the old parenthetical gender marker from the English name.
The mini album We Are, Japanese activities, individual releases, and touring showed that the rebrand was not a blank reboot. Older music remains part of the discography; the new name tells readers how the current group identifies itself.
2026: We made and the authorship argument
The ninth mini album We made was released in Korea on July 6, 2026. The official track list contains “Mono (Feat. skaiwater),” “Gimme Dat Love,” “Morning,” “Crow,” and “Love Is Pain.” The Japanese official release was scheduled for August 5.
At the Korean media showcase, the members described a ninth-year desire to keep challenging themselves instead of repeating familiar methods. The title track “Gimme Dat Love” became especially interesting because the group most associated with internal production used an outside-led composition process while Soyeon remained involved in the lyrics. Fans were not wrong to discuss whether the track still sounded like i-dle. The credits made that question part of the release.

The official initial routing included Taipei, Bangkok, Melbourne, Sydney, Singapore, Yokohama, and Hong Kong, with additional dates expected. The tour name refers to placing emphasis where the listener does not expect it, which is almost suspiciously perfect branding for a group that keeps changing the argument on the weak beat.
Tour history matters because live performance exposes whether a concept survives without editing. i-dle’s strongest stages redistribute focus across members rather than treating every song as Soyeon plus four supporting angles.

Name change: what disappeared and what did not
The original English name “(G)I-DLE” contained a parenthetical G that invited endless explanations and inconsistent pronunciation. In Korean, the group was known as 여자아이들, commonly understood as “girl idols” or “girls/children,” depending on how literally someone translated the components.
The 2025 change to i-dle did not delete the old name from historical releases, credits, search databases, or embedded video titles. It established the preferred current styling. On CVM Sekai, older releases can retain historically correct styling while the living group profile uses i-dle.
A rebrand is not a time machine. It changes the current label, not the evidence trail.
Neverland and the fandom rabbit hole
The fandom name Neverland references the place where people do not grow old. The joke is that Neverland has watched this group do an unreasonable amount of growing in public.
Fans often enter through different doors: production credits, vocals, queer readings of visual work, variety clips, Chinese or Thai member content, fashion, choreography, K/DA, or one song that refused to leave the chart. That variety is a strength, but it also creates recurring fights over line distribution, solo promotion, company treatment, and whether criticism of a track is secretly criticism of a member.

i-dle’s catalog is often described as self-produced, but the useful version of that claim names the work. Soyeon is a central producer and title-track architect; Minnie and Yuqi also carry substantial writing and production records; outside collaborators remain part of the credits.
