aespa

Four women, several digital selves, one extremely expensive identity crisis, and a discography that treats bass like construction equipment.

aespa started with avatars and a villain named Black Mamba, survived KWANGYA, then proved the group could outgrow the vocabulary without losing the strange machine underneath it.

RaeRae’s quick read: aespa did not become important because the lore was complicated. They became important because “Next Level,” “Savage,” “Drama,” “Supernova,” and “Whiplash” made the weirdness sound unavoidable. The avatars got people talking. The voices, faces, hooks, and willingness to release songs that start arguments kept them here.

Current era: KISS N TELL after LEMONADE

KISS N TELL

Released July 24, 2026, aespa’s first Japanese mini album arrived roughly two years after the group’s Japanese debut with “Hot Mess.” The six-track project includes the title track, “ATTITUDE,” and “In Halo.” GISELLE later explained that “KISS N TELL” had existed as a possible B-side, but she pushed the idea that its different flavor could work as a Japanese title track.

That detail is exactly why artist pages need current context. This was not a random leftover dumped overseas. A member helped recognize where the song could become the main event.

LEMONADE

The second Korean studio album arrived May 29 with ten core tracks and additional versions on digital editions. It sold past one million copies on Circle Chart, becoming the group’s eighth million-selling release. The era began with “WDA” featuring G-DRAGON, then flipped into the brighter title track “LEMONADE.”

WDA’s feature divided listeners; the official performance cut removing G-DRAGON’s rap gave the debate a second life.

History without pretending it was inevitable

2020 · Black Mamba

KARINA, GISELLE, WINTER, and NINGNING debuted in the middle of the pandemic with digital counterparts called æ-aespa. “Black Mamba” introduced the conflict between the members, their avatars, and the connection system called SYNK.

2021 · Next Level and Savage

“Next Level” should have been too strange to become a national hit: a remake, a mid-song switch, and lore words delivered with absolute seriousness. Instead it became the group’s breakthrough. “Savage” proved the abrasive future-pop identity could sustain an album rather than one viral structure.

2022–2023 · The real world gets louder

Coachella, “Girls,” “Spicy,” and “Drama” shifted the balance toward the human performers. The lore remained available, but the group no longer needed a villain explanation every time the bass entered.

2024 · Supernova and Armageddon

The first studio album paired the explosive “Supernova” with the darker “Armageddon.” The former became a defining hit; the album showed aespa could turn its original digital anxiety into broader questions about identity and power.

2025 · Whiplash aftermath

“Whiplash,” “Dirty Work,” and Rich Man pushed a colder, more grounded confidence. Fans who loved the maximal fantasy sometimes missed KWANGYA; others preferred the women occupying the frame without an instruction manual.

2026 · LEMONADE and KISS N TELL

The second full album brought hip-hop collaboration, bright title-track energy, and another million seller. Weeks later, the first Japanese mini album showed a lighter side and gave the group two active markets in one summer.

Fandom corner

MY means “the most precious friend” in KWANGYA language. Even when the story vocabulary goes quiet, the name remains. The easiest way to learn the members is not hair color. Listen for NINGNING’s fuller power, WINTER’s bright cutting tone, GISELLE’s rhythmic looseness and multilingual rap, and KARINA’s lower color and center authority.

The avatar names are æ-KARINA, æ-GISELLE, æ-WINTER, and æ-NINGNING. They are part of aespa’s origin, but a member page should not trap a grown performer in her 2020 lore card. Each profile here follows the actual career: vocals, rap, solo work, fashion, performance growth, and current releases.

Tea, context, and the things people keep flattening

WDA was a real split, not automatic hate. Listeners praised the production and GISELLE while questioning the hook, vocal restraint, and G-DRAGON feature. The performance video then removed his rap, proving the edit itself was worth discussing.

NINGNING and the 2025 NHK controversy: the Japan official site acknowledged criticism of an older social post and announced the year-end performance would proceed with KARINA, GISELLE, and WINTER. This belongs in sourced context, not rumor inflation or nationality warfare.

KISS N TELL came with member input. GISELLE said she suggested moving the song toward a Japanese title-track role because it did not fit the Korean concept as naturally. That is useful creative context, not empty “the members participated” language.

Sales reality: LEMONADE crossed one million on Circle Chart in June 2026. Debate around individual songs did not erase the group’s commercial scale.
