Karina

Yu Ji-min became aespa’s leader after an Instagram casting message, years of dance training and the deeply unfair experience of being introduced to the public while standing beside Taemin and Kai. The face gets attention first. The steadiness, low vocal color, obsessive gaming, careful leadership and very dry humor are why people stay.

Before SM: dance, church and the person behind the impossible face card

Karina was born in Suwon and raised in Bundang. She has spoken about being close to her family; her mother and older sister worked in nursing. She danced before SM turned her into a trainee, and Girls’ Generation’s “Into the New World” was among the performances that made the idol path feel possible.

Her Catholic baptismal name, Katarina, eventually supplied the stage name. That detail matters because “Karina” was not manufactured from nothing. It grew out of an identity she already carried, including the rosary ring fans notice on important days.

The Instagram DM that did not look real

An SM casting employee contacted her through Instagram. Karina initially suspected a scam because the recruiter did not immediately identify the company. After the audition came roughly four years of training. She left conventional high school and later completed the equivalency exam, reportedly taking it alongside Winter.

SM tested her in public before debut. She appeared in Taemin’s “Want” music video and promotional stages, then performed with EXO’s Kai in a Hyundai and SM virtual showcase. Those placements were brutal auditions disguised as exposure: stand beside elite dancers, remain visible and do not look like somebody’s trainee.

aespa: being the leader when everybody is debuting inside a software update

Karina was introduced as aespa’s second member in October 2020. The group debuted weeks later with “Black Mamba,” virtual counterparts and an entire vocabulary waiting at the door. Her role was not simply to stand in the center. She had to translate pressure across four members with different nationalities, training histories and public expectations.

Her lower tone is one of aespa’s structural tools. Winter and Ningning can cut upward through the production; Karina gives the verses weight underneath them. Her dancing favors clean lines and control over loose groove. As the group moved from pandemic cameras to Coachella, tours and live festivals, that control became more useful than the old “AI visual” comparisons.

She also joined GOT the beat, the first Girls On Top unit, beside BoA, Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, Seulgi, Wendy and Winter. The unit attracted arguments about lyrics and distribution, but the lineup placed Karina inside SM’s female-performance lineage before aespa was two years old.

“Menagerie,” “Up” and the solo career hiding in concert set lists

Karina co-wrote “Menagerie,” first performed on aespa’s SYNK: HYPER LINE tour. “Up” arrived as a solo stage on SYNK: PARALLEL LINE, then escaped the concert economy entirely. Its bass-heavy confidence, compact hook and choreography turned the track into a public hit after release. She participated in writing, which matters because the song’s efficient attitude fits her too neatly to be treated as borrowed clothing.

Later stages such as “Good Stuff” continued that lane while collaborations and OST work broadened it. “Sad Waltz” for Song of the Bandits used a darker atmosphere. Work with Jannabi moved her outside SM’s usual chrome. None of this equals a full solo album yet, but the outline is no longer hypothetical.

YearRelease or stageWhy it matters
2023“Menagerie”Self-written concert solo; the first clear Karina-specific music file.
2023“Sad Waltz”OST work with a moodier vocal color.
2024“Up”Concert solo turned chart hit; Karina participated in the lyrics.
2025Jannabi collaboration; “Good Stuff”Evidence that her solo identity can leave one production lane.

2025–2026: Rich Man, LEMONADE and the next tour

aespa’s 2025 chapter kept Karina in the center of a group moving between full-group records, individual work and an expanding touring schedule. The mini album Rich Man extended the harder live-band edge that had started appearing around the group’s performance identity. Karina also continued fashion and variety work without treating those schedules as a replacement for music.

In 2026, aespa released the digital single “ATTITUDE” in March, then returned with “WDA (Whole Different Animal)” as the pre-release for their second studio album. LEMONADE arrived on May 29, 2026 with eleven tracks and a dedicated Karina edition. It was aespa’s first Korean full-length album since Armageddon, and it began a new era built around the idea that only the members can define themselves.

The group followed the album with plans for the 2026–27 SYNK : COMPLæXITY world tour. Karina also held her MEMORY BOX birthday event in March and was announced as an ambassador for MARK & LONA. Those individual schedules belong here because they document her public career, but they do not replace the musical receipt behind her artist placement.

Her solo status remains grounded in released music. “Up,” first performed on tour and officially issued in 2024, became a major digital hit and earned Karina her first solo music-show win. The 2026 activity adds group work and performance context; it does not require a second profile. This same canonical page therefore serves both the aespa member carousel and the solo-artist carousel.

Panda side quests: games, mystery shows, Nike and the surprisingly unserious leader

Karina is a dedicated gamer and anime fan, not a corporate android waiting in sleep mode. Fans have watched her discuss games, lose composure over food and turn lives into low-stakes comedy. Her fast reactions make variety work feel less like a scheduled personality exam.

Netflix’s Agents of Mystery gave her a structured reality role outside aespa, while music and game programs let her use the competitive side that fits the Aries and Dragon combination a little too well. Fashion partnerships expanded separately; Nike announced her as part of its family in 2025. She has also built a reputation for taking care of staff and members, which is less photogenic than a center shot but more relevant to why a group keeps functioning.

Panda side-quest map: gaming clips → anime mentions → food lives → Agents of Mystery → Taemin’s “Want” → GOT the beat → “Up” stages. This is a panda pile, not a rabbit hole. We have standards.

Fandom notes and things the fact box misses

  • AI visual: the early nickname came from sharply symmetrical styling and the avatar concept. It is not a personality description.
  • Karomi: a soft fan nickname that sits at the opposite end of the stage-image spectrum.
  • Whale: one of her representative animals and a recurring fan symbol.
  • Leadership: she tends to explain, redirect and care for people without performing authority as punishment.
  • Stage control: her power is placement and timing. She rarely looks rushed, which makes small choices read larger.
  • Voice: the lower register is not decoration. It prevents aespa’s high vocal architecture from floating away.
RaeRae take: Karina is easy to flatten into “the visual” because the camera keeps proving the obvious. The more interesting file is a woman who was cast online, tested beside elite seniors, asked to lead SM’s strangest debut and then wrote the solo song that became bigger than its concert slot. Pretty opened the tab. Competence kept it there.

Official video tracking history

Karina’s officially released solo catalog is still compact. CVM tracks the official SM Entertainment upload and will add future solo videos as they are released.
