Before MEOVV, Ella Gross already had a child-model portfolio, television credits, a music-video role, and millions of people who recognized her face. Idol life still made her start over. The cameras were familiar. Korean dorm life, live vocals, choreography, and becoming the youngest member of a new team were not.
A working childhood, not a surprise Instagram discovery
Ella was born and raised in Los Angeles. Her mother is Korean-American and her father is German-American. She began modeling at about two years old, stopped for a period, then returned to the industry as a child. By 2018, Korean fashion media was not introducing her as an aspiring model. Vogue Korea was already calling the ten-year-old an international child model and influencer with roughly 700,000 followers.
That distinction matters. The very polished face in MEOVV’s debut trailers came from years of catalog work, campaign shoots, runways, casting rooms, and learning exactly what a photographer means when an instruction is only three words long. Published profiles connect her childhood portfolio to brands including H&M, Levi’s, and Gap. She also walked Tokyo Girls Collection in 2018. That does not automatically make someone an idol, but it does explain why the lens rarely catches her searching for it.
Ella also worked as a child actor. Her credits include young Betty in Heathers, Sasha in the Malibu Rescue franchise, young Soji in Star Trek: Picard, Julie in Teachers, and later guest roles in Best Foot Forward and Them. In 2018, K-pop audiences saw her in Zion.T and Seulgi’s “Hello Tutorial” music video. So yes, she was technically in a Korean pop video six years before she debuted in a Korean pop group.
THEBLACKLABEL and the move to Seoul
THEBLACKLABEL signed Ella in 2018 while she was still a child model. Korean coverage at the time quoted producer Teddy praising more than her appearance. He pointed to her voice and the qualities that could support work across entertainment. Years of public association with the label followed, but her actual preparation for MEOVV intensified much later.
Ella told Teen Vogue that she arrived in Seoul roughly a year and a half before the group’s 2025 interview. The transition was not the glossy montage people imagine when they hear “global trainee.” Her Korean was still developing, she was living in a trainee dorm, and ordinary tasks became ridiculous little emergencies. 2026: BITE NOW
By the BITE NOW era, the group sounded more comfortable explaining its own work. Ella’s public personality had loosened too. She could joke, answer more freely in Korean, and participate without every pause looking like a language test. The improvement is not cosmetic. Comfort changes timing, facial expression, ad-libs, and the way an idol reacts when a performance does not go exactly as rehearsed.

Ella’s pre-idol résumé is unusual even in an industry full of child actors and models. She worked in American television and streaming projects before moving into a Korean idol system. Fashion remains part of her current public identity. Her experience means she can move between idol styling and editorial presentation without looking like she borrowed somebody else’s wardrobe for the afternoon. In 2025 she became associated with Miu Miu as a brand ambassador, a logical continuation of her earlier modeling career rather than a random luxury appointment after debut.
The useful distinction is that acting, modeling, and idol performance overlap without being interchangeable. Acting taught scene awareness. Modeling taught control of the frame. K-pop requires stamina, live adjustment, musical timing, and coordination with four other people. Ella has been compared to BLACKPINK’s Jennie for years. The resemblance, her friendship with BLACKPINK members, and her long connection to a Teddy-led label made the nickname easy for entertainment media. It also became lazy. A comparison that helped casual readers recognize a child model can flatten an adult career before it starts.
Jennie is part of Ella’s pre-debut public story, but Ella is not a replacement Jennie, a miniature Jennie, or proof that THEBLACKLABEL owns a photocopier. Her tone is lighter, her stage energy is younger, and her professional history began in Los Angeles modeling and acting rather than YG’s trainee system. The fair way to discuss the connection is as context, then move on and evaluate the person actually performing.
