Early life
Son Seung-wan spent part of her youth studying in Canada and the United States before returning to South Korea. She entered SM through a global audition and was introduced through SM Rookies.
Career
From debut, Wendy’s range, control and ability to stack harmonies made her central to Red Velvet’s sound. Her recovery from a serious 2019 stage accident became one of the group’s defining interruptions; she returned to group activity after extensive rehabilitation.
Why she matters in Red Velvet
She handles belts, delicate upper-register work, ad-libs and English phrasing, but the more important skill is musical judgment. Wendy knows when a line needs force and when it needs air.
Solo work and side quests
Her solo albums Like Water and Wish You Hell established a separate vocal identity. She has also worked in radio, television, collaborations and musical theater. In 2025 she left SM for solo management while remaining a Red Velvet member.
