Early life
Bae Joo-hyun grew up in Daegu and entered SM Entertainment as a trainee in 2009. She was introduced through SM Rookies before debuting as Red Velvet’s leader in 2014.
Career
Irene anchored the group’s public identity from “Happiness” onward, balancing rap, vocals, dance and the unglamorous work of keeping a five-person team moving. She later formed the Irene & Seulgi subunit and expanded into hosting, acting and solo music.
Why she matters in Red Velvet
Her strength is control. Irene rarely performs as if she is chasing the camera; she lets the camera come to her. That restraint works especially well inside Red Velvet’s stranger concepts, where a composed face can become either elegant or vaguely threatening.
Solo work and side quests
