How the group works
The “red” side is bright, elastic and occasionally unhinged: hooks that arrive smiling and then refuse to leave. The “velvet” side leans into R&B, close harmonies, darker storytelling and the kind of elegance that usually has something suspicious happening behind it. Their best songs blur the border. “Psycho,” “Chill Kill” and “Cosmic” all sound beautiful first and emotionally unsafe about ten seconds later.
History
Irene, Seulgi, Wendy and Joy debuted with “Happiness” in 2014. Yeri joined in 2015 during the “Ice Cream Cake” era, completing the five-member lineup. The group grew from colorful early singles into one of K-pop’s most recognizable concept acts, moving through “Red Flavor,” “Bad Boy,” “Peek-A-Boo,” “Psycho,” “Feel My Rhythm,” “Chill Kill” and “Cosmic” without flattening themselves into one genre.
The group also survived real interruptions: Wendy’s serious 2019 stage accident, long gaps between full-group releases and members building solo careers under different management arrangements. Red Velvet remained a group even as Wendy and Yeri left SM for solo representation in 2025.
