Takumi Kawanishi

JO1’s bright-toned performer, songwriter and actor. Takumi can sell a pop chorus, a close camera shot and a surprisingly dense list of self-written songs without treating any lane like a side hobby.

Produce 101 Japan and JO1

Takumi joined Produce 101 Japan without a long public entertainment career, then became one of the season’s most immediately recognizable contestants. Viewers selected him for JO1, where his expressive delivery and camera instinct gave the debut lineup a natural pop focal point.

JO1 debuted in March 2020 with PROTOSTAR and “Infinity.” The group’s scale means every member needs a distinct visual and musical function; Takumi has built his through clean pop instinct, emotional directness and a fast-expanding acting résumé.

Music, performance and credited work

Takumi’s official credits include lyrics and composition for “DIY,” “BINGO,” “HAPPY UNBIRTHDAY,” “To Santa.,” “SUPER STAR,” “Is the World Big? Am I Small?,” “Laughter and Tears” and “Come Again.” He also contributed to JO1’s “YOLO-konde” and “Bon Voyage.”

For the film Buzzy Noise, he performed as Kiyosumi and released “surge <single edit>” under the character name. The project’s included song “Heaven” also carries his lyric and composition credit. That overlap between acting and music fits him: his performance style already treats melody as character work.

Acting, broadcasting and side quests

Takumi starred as Kiyosumi in the 2024 film Buzzy Noise and played Yamato Tachibana in Run for Money THE MOVIE. His drama credits include the lead role of Ichiro Imai in Short Program: Plus 1, Shiki Souma in Cool Doji Danshi, and Yuma Araki in WOWOW’s Shadow Work.

He has also handled sports-event appearances, including a Tokyo Dome ceremonial first pitch, plus variety programs and a substantial fashion-magazine record. These are separate professional lanes, not decorative biography filler.

Fandom notes and useful context

  • Acting lane: Buzzy Noise connected his music and screen work instead of making one advertise the other.
  • Writer file: his official catalog contains multiple solo and group composition credits.
  • Hyogo roots: his official profile lists Hyogo Prefecture as his birthplace.
  • Camera fluency: Takumi reads close-ups quickly, but his best group work happens when he passes focus rather than hoarding it.

RaeRae take

Takumi has the dangerous pop-star skill of making a polished choice look accidental. The smile arrives exactly when the camera needs it, the line lands, and then you discover he has been quietly writing half the soundtrack to his own side quests.
