Syoya Kimata
JO1’s genre-curious performer, songwriter and voice actor. Syoya is equally comfortable adding texture to a group track, writing a strange little solo turn, or walking into an animation booth.

Produce 101 Japan and JO1
Syoya was selected through Produce 101 Japan after showing a flexible performance style that did not fit one tidy position. In JO1, that flexibility became the point: he can move between rap, vocals, comic timing and character work without making the switch feel like a costume change.
JO1 debuted in March 2020 with PROTOSTAR and “Infinity.” The group’s scale means every member needs a distinct visual and musical function; Syoya has built his through rhythmic versatility, eccentric humor and curiosity across music and voice work.
Music, performance and credited work
His official writing credits include JO1’s “YOLO-konde,” “SuperCali,” “NEWSmile” and “Bon Voyage,” along with “We Can Fly.” His solo releases include “easy life,” “Heart Shot” and “fix,” with lyric or composition credits attached to each; “Groove on” also appears in his official writing record.
That catalog explains why his contributions are hard to reduce to one group position. Syoya often supplies color: a rhythmic interruption, a vocal texture or a tonal left turn that keeps a JO1 song from becoming too symmetrical.
Acting, broadcasting and side quests
Syoya voiced King Bocchi in Shimajiro the Movie: Miracle Island’s Nanairo Carnation and Shinji Kudo in Trapezium. His voice credits also include Gunjou no Fanfare and the scientist Dupont in Run for Money.
On screen, he led the Short Program episode “Nani ga Nandaka” as Keiichi Kataoka, appeared as Yu Ogura in Shoutai wo Kakushita Bokura no Renairon, and played Ken Ika in Run for Money THE MOVIE. He also served as a regular on NHK Educational TV’s Hangul! Navi.
Fandom notes and useful context
- Voice-acting lane: multiple credited animation roles make this a real branch of his career.
- Writer file: “easy life,” “Heart Shot” and “fix” document an increasingly personal solo voice.
- Aichi roots: his official profile lists Aichi Prefecture as his birthplace.
- Cat energy: fandom jokes about his unpredictability survive because he can look completely relaxed while choosing the least expected answer.
RaeRae take
Syoya is the member most likely to make you ask whether that sound, joke or character choice was planned. Usually it was. Possibly. The uncertainty is part of the charm, but the official credits underneath it are very real.
