Produce 101 Japan and JO1 history

Shion trained in Korea before entering Produce 101 Japan, giving him a different reference point from many contestants in the first season. Viewers selected him for JO1’s original lineup, where he promoted from the 2020 debut through 2025. After a hiatus and discussions about a possible return, he chose not to renew his LAPONE contract; the company confirmed that his JO1 activities ended on December 31, 2025.

JO1 debuted in March 2020 with PROTOSTAR and “Infinity.” The group’s scale means every member needs a distinct visual and musical function; Shion has built his through a deep tone, direct delivery and a screen presence that could turn from intimidating to ridiculous in one edit.

Music, performance and credited work

During JO1’s original eleven-member era, Shion contributed rap, vocals and a lower tonal counterweight to the group’s brighter voices. His official writing record includes “We Can Fly” with Syoya Kimata and Shosei Ohira.

His history belongs in JO1’s discography from PROTOSTAR through the releases promoted before his 2025 hiatus. Current lineup material should not list him as active, but removing him from the older catalog would be equally inaccurate.

Acting, broadcasting and side quests

Shion starred as Kenji Uehara in the Short Program episode “Yuku Haru” and co-starred as Jun Soma in the 2023 drama Blue Birthday. His television work also included variety programs and fashion-editorial appearances.

LAPONE announced in December 2025 that his exclusive contract would expire at the end of that month. Shion’s own message said he had decided not to renew and to end his JO1 activities after reflecting during the hiatus.

Fandom notes and useful context

  • Status clarity: former member, not part of JO1’s current nine-person lineup.
  • Official end date: December 31, 2025, when his LAPONE contract expired.
  • Shiga roots: his archived official profile lists Shiga Prefecture as his birthplace.
  • Acting lane: Short Program and Blue Birthday are credited roles, not rumored casting.

RaeRae take

Shion’s JO1 chapter ended messily enough that vague wording would only make it worse. The clean version is also the fairest one: he helped build the original lineup, went on hiatus, chose not to renew, and is not a current member. History does not need to be erased to be labeled correctly.

Shion Tsurubo does not currently have a separately verified official solo-video catalog. JO1 group releases remain attached to the JO1 group profile so group totals are not duplicated as individual activity.
