Busan, family, and the trot voice hiding inside K-pop

I.N was born Yang Jeong-in in Busan and grew up with an older brother and a younger brother. Before the idol trainee system, he had experience as a child model and developed an interest in singing shaped by trot, a Korean popular-music tradition built on distinctive melodic turns, direct emotion, and recognizable vocal ornament.

That trot background matters because it explains the color that made early evaluators unsure what to do with him. His tone is narrow, bright, and slightly old-fashioned in a way that does not blend anonymously into a modern idol chorus. The same quality that sounded unusual became his signature once his technique learned how to support it.

He moved from Busan to Seoul to train under JYP Entertainment and later attended the School of Performing Arts Seoul, studying applied music. He was the youngest member of the trainee team that became Stray Kids.

The survival show did not pretend he was ready

On the 2017 Stray Kids survival program, I.N’s weaknesses were public. Pitch, breath, confidence, and consistency became recurring pressure points. He was young, visibly nervous, and still adapting a distinctive natural tone to demanding pop material.

The program’s value in his biography is not that struggle automatically makes later success inspiring. It gives us an actual record. We can hear where the voice began. We can watch the members support him. We can compare the trainee performing under fear with the singer carrying solo stages during a stadium tour.

I.N survived the final lineup and debuted in March 2018. Because he was the maknae, early content often packaged him through braces, shy smiles, fox comparisons, and older members collapsing over his cuteness. All of that happened. It was never the whole job.

The voice: distinctive first, stronger every year

I.N’s tone is one of the easiest in Stray Kids to identify. It has a forward placement and a bright, almost reedy edge. In the wrong arrangement, that can sound tight. In the right melody, it cuts through dense production and adds a traditional emotional pull that no other member duplicates.

His growth involved stabilizing the breath, relaxing unnecessary tension, and learning when to preserve the natural color instead of forcing himself toward a generic pop tone. “Levanter,” “My Universe,” “Gone Away,” “Waiting for Us,” “Cover Me,” “Hallucination,” and his trot performances show different stages of that process.

His trot ability is not a comedy trick, although variety shows often frame it playfully. Trot demands phrasing and ornament that contemporary idol training can flatten. I.N knows how to lean into that tradition, which gives him a musical identity outside the group’s main production language.

Within VocalRACHA, his voice contrasts with Seungmin’s. Seungmin brings a clean, grainy pop-ballad foundation. I.N brings a more pointed color and unusual melodic inflection. The goal is not to decide which one “wins.” The useful question is why a producer would choose one tone for a particular line.

Growing up in public while seven men refuse to be normal about it

I.N’s adolescence and early adulthood are embedded in Stray Kids content. Fans watched the braces come off, the shoulders broaden, the confidence settle, and the fashion become increasingly expensive. The older members continued describing him as their baby long after the evidence became ridiculous.

That dynamic is affectionate but can distort his profile. I.N is not merely the beneficiary of seven protective hyungs. He supports them too. He observes quietly, delivers blunt truths, and uses the maknae position as both shelter and weapon. “Maknae on Top” works because the joke is accurate enough to sting.

He has also spoken about wanting to be recognized for improvement rather than simply praised for being cute. His stage work supports that. Later performances are more grounded, vocally secure, and comfortable with sensual or darker material that debut-era I.N could not have sold without looking like he had borrowed someone else’s coat.

Solo and unit music

“Maknae on Top”: Released through SKZ-PLAYER in 2021 with Bang Chan and Changbin. It formalized the household hierarchy while pretending to be a joke. I.N sits at the top, the older men provide supporting testimony, and nobody files an appeal.

“Hug Me”: His solo on SKZ-Replay. Bright, affectionate, and written with his participation. It suits his clear tone and avoids burying him under a dramatic arrangement that wants to prove adulthood too loudly.

“Hallucination”: His 2024 solo on HOP, co-written and co-composed by I.N. The song moves into darker, sensual territory with a controlled performance that made the fandom briefly forget every baby-bread nickname it had ever used.

“Burnin’ Tires” with Changbin: Released through Mixtape: Dominate in 2025. The punky energy gives I.N room to sound rowdy and mischievous beside Changbin’s force.

“Gone Away” with Han and Seungmin: A vocal-focused unit track about separation and emotional residue. It places I.N beside two strong melodic storytellers and lets the differences in tone carry the scene.

“Waiting for Us”: A vocal-unit song with Bang Chan, Lee Know, Seungmin, and I.N. Its band arrangement became a concert favorite because the voices are allowed to stand in front of the production.

“START!”: A 2025 OST connected to Resident Playbook, performed with Lee Know and Seungmin. It extends I.N’s solo-profile footprint beyond the group catalog.

He also helped write material including “Mixtape: OH” and other group or unit work. His credit list is smaller than 3RACHA’s because production is not his primary group function, but the solo songs prove he is developing a point of view rather than waiting for a company-selected track.

Fashion: the maknae found tailoring

I.N’s interest in fashion has been visible for years through airport looks, careful styling choices, and the enthusiasm with which he discusses clothing. His taste often favors clean silhouettes, texture, neutral color, sharp jackets, and pieces that look considered without screaming for help.

He attended Bottega Veneta’s Summer 2025 show in Milan in September 2024, then the house named him a brand ambassador in January 2025. The partnership makes visual sense. Bottega’s quiet-luxury language and emphasis on material suit someone whose fashion rarely depends on logo volume.

The appointment also marked a public shift. The youngest member was no longer being included as the cute accessory to a group fashion story. He had an individual seat, an individual contract, and a clear visual identity.

Philanthropy

For his birthday in 2024, I.N donated 100 million won to Samsung Medical Center to support treatment for children with cancer from low-income families. The amount qualified him for the hospital’s donor recognition group.

In 2026, he donated another 100 million won to South Korea’s National Cancer Center, again directing the gift toward patient care. The repeated focus on medical support for children and cancer patients gives the donations a pattern instead of making them isolated celebrity announcements.

He has also participated in group giving with Stray Kids. Those records belong in the biography because fame creates financial scale. What an artist chooses to do with some of that scale is relevant.

Maknae on top, fox at large

I.N is associated with a fennec fox because of his eyes, smile, and pointed expressions. His SKZOO character is FoxI.Ny. The image is cute. The personality behind it is more composed than early content suggests.

He is observant, direct, and often calmer than the members trying to provoke a cute reaction. He enjoys food, fashion, and teasing the older members from a position protected by years of collective affection. When he refuses skinship or rejects a performance request, the hyungs behave like disappointed parents at a school recital.

His Busan roots surface in speech and temperament, especially when dialect appears. His family remains important to him, and being one of three brothers gave him experience on both sides of an age hierarchy before Stray Kids made him the permanent youngest.
