Early life, family and education

Kim Tae-hyung was born on December 30, 1995, in the Seo District of Daegu and grew up in Geochang County. He is the oldest of three children, with a younger brother and younger sister. Public profiles identify his family with the Gwangsan Kim clan. His childhood was not a glossy entertainment-industry origin story. Geochang is agricultural, and V has repeatedly spoken with affection about his grandparents and the rural environment in which he spent much of his early life.

He wanted to become a singer while still in elementary school. His father supported the idea but told him that wanting it was not enough, so Tae-hyung began saxophone lessons in middle school. He studied the instrument for several years and once imagined pursuing it professionally. The saxophone detail later became a running joke whenever fans rediscovered old photographs, but it also explains his early attraction to jazz, brass-heavy arrangements and singers with warmer, older vocal styles.

After entering Big Hit, he moved to Seoul and attended Korean Arts High School, graduating in 2014 with Jimin. He later graduated from Global Cyber University in August 2020 with a major in Broadcasting and Entertainment. He subsequently enrolled in Hanyang Cyber University’s graduate program in Advertising and Media. Education dates on idol profiles often get copied without context; in his case, they show how trainee life, debut schedules, touring and university overlapped for years.

The audition that was not supposed to be his

V originally went to a Big Hit audition in Daegu to support a friend. A staff member encouraged him to audition as well, but he needed his father’s permission before participating. He passed and became the only successful applicant from that Daegu audition. The friend he accompanied did not enter the company. It is one of those stories that sounds manufactured for variety television, except it has followed him since the beginning.

Big Hit then made him BTS’s secret member. The company withheld his photos and pre-debut logs while the other trainees posted material and began attracting early followers. The intended marketing surprise had an uglier private effect. V later explained that he felt lonely and worried the secrecy meant he might be removed from the lineup. He watched the other members receive fan messages while he could not answer publicly or even establish that he existed.

2013–present: BTS

V debuted with BTS on June 13, 2013, performing “No More Dream” from 2 Cool 4 Skool on M Countdown. His official position was vocalist. Early BTS material leaned heavily on the rap line and often placed the vocalists in higher, urgent passages, so his lower tone was not always used to its full advantage. Over time, producers learned to treat his baritone as contrast rather than force it into the same brightness as the other vocalists.

The group’s story from small stages to stadiums belongs on the BTS profile, but V’s part in that growth has a specific shape. He became one of the group’s strongest camera performers. He can change the emotional temperature of a shot with very small expressions, which is why fancams and performance clips often focus on his face rather than only his dance lines. On tour, “Singularity” gave him a solo stage built around restraint, a coat rack and a mask instead of pyrotechnics. It held arenas anyway.

In October 2018, V and the other BTS members received the fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit from President Moon Jae-in for their contribution to the spread of Korean culture. In July 2021, all seven were appointed Special Presidential Envoys for Future Generations and Culture. They attended the United Nations General Assembly, met diplomats and represented South Korea in public settings far beyond a normal idol schedule.

V also joined j-hope and Zara Larsson on “A Brand New Day” for the BTS World soundtrack. The song debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart. His friendship song “Friends” with Jimin appeared on Map of the Soul: 7 and was later used in Marvel’s Eternals. Fans call V and Jimin the 95-line because both were born in 1995; the song documented a friendship built from school uniforms, dorm fights, dumplings and the strange experience of growing famous together.

The three BTS solo songs

“Stigma” (2016)

V co-wrote and composed “Stigma” for Wings. The track uses neo-soul and jazz coloring to push his voice from low, breathy phrases into falsetto. It was an early demonstration that “the low-voice member” was an incomplete description. The lyrics circle guilt and an apology that cannot undo harm. Within the Wings era’s literary framework, fans connected it to the character narratives, but the vocal performance works even without a theory board.

“Singularity” (2018)

“Singularity” opened the Love Yourself: Tear era as a comeback trailer. The song’s R&B minimalism made room for V’s tone and controlled delivery. Critics from The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian and other outlets included it in year-end or best-song discussions. The stage became one of his defining performances because it relied on timing, eye contact and discomfort rather than speed.

“Inner Child” (2020)

V co-wrote “Inner Child” for Map of the Soul: 7. The song addresses his younger self from the impossible vantage point of stadium-era BTS. It is not subtle: the chorus opens into arena rock and promises the child that the difficult years will change. That directness is the point. The secret trainee who feared disappearing is singing to the boy who had no idea millions of people would eventually know his face.

Writing and composition inside BTS

V’s official songwriting history started before his solo debut. On The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1, he co-wrote and co-produced “Hold Me Tight” and contributed lyrics to “Fun Boyz.” A melody he created was used in “Run” on Pt. 2. He helped write and compose “Stigma,” “Inner Child” and “Blue & Grey.” “Blue & Grey” began as material for his own project before it became one of the emotional anchors of BTS’s pandemic-era album BE.

His credits also include “4 O’Clock” with RM, “Scenery,” “Winter Bear,” “Sweet Night” and other solo work. Credit lists should not be inflated into the claim that he single-handedly produced BTS albums. They also should not be erased because he is primarily known as a vocalist. His writing tends to arrive through melody, atmosphere, memory and image rather than the dense verbal architecture associated with RM or SUGA.

Unofficial and gift releases are part of the fandom record too. He covered Adele’s “Someone Like You” and released “Hug Me” with j-hope. Those tracks circulated through SoundCloud and BTS channels during the years when free songs, Festa gifts and covers built a parallel discography outside conventional album promotion.

Hwarang, acting and the Wooga Squad

V made his acting debut under his real name as Seok Han-sung in KBS2’s 2016 historical drama Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. Han-sung is the youngest member of the Hwarang group, bright and affectionate, with a family conflict that becomes much darker than his introduction suggests. V’s inexperience shows in places, but so does the natural warmth that made the character memorable. He and Jin recorded “It’s Definitely You” for the soundtrack.

The drama also connected V with Park Seo-joon and Park Hyung-sik. Through them and their wider circle, he became part of the friend group fans call the Wooga Squad: V, Park Seo-joon, Park Hyung-sik, Choi Woo-shik and Peakboy. They have supported one another’s releases, attended events and appeared together in In the Soop: Friendcation. The group is unusual in celebrity coverage because it has lasted beyond the promotional usefulness of the original drama.

V later starred in IU’s “Love Wins All” music video. The short film cast him opposite IU in a dystopian story about a couple fleeing a deadly cube. Fans praised the chemistry and the way the video used photographs, formalwear and imagined domestic happiness to make the ending hurt more. It was an acting performance inside a music video, not a return to a television drama, but it reminded everybody why his screen career remains an open question rather than a closed chapter.

Independent songs and drama OSTs

“4 O’Clock,” released for BTS Festa in 2017, was co-produced with RM. Its late-night stillness became a model for the music fans expected from V: muted, intimate and comfortable leaving space around the voice.

He released the self-composed “Scenery” through BTS’s SoundCloud in January 2019. V wrote and composed the song, photographed its cover and worked with Docskim, Pdogg and Hiss Noise. It passed 100 million streams on SoundCloud at record speed and broke the platform’s daily streaming record repeatedly during its first weeks. In August 2019 he followed it with “Winter Bear,” his first all-English solo song. He co-produced it, photographed the artwork under his Vante identity and directed the accompanying music video.

“Sweet Night,” written and produced for Itaewon Class in 2020, connected music to friendship because Park Seo-joon starred in the drama. The acoustic indie-pop song debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart and received praise for its warm arrangement and restrained vocal. “Snow Flower,” featuring Peakboy, arrived on Christmas Day that year.

“Christmas Tree,” from the 2021 drama Our Beloved Summer, became V’s first solo Billboard Hot 100 entry at No. 79. The song works in the drama as part of the lead character’s emotional environment rather than a loud promotional interruption. In August 2023, “Scenery,” “Winter Bear” and “Snow Flower” finally reached commercial streaming services worldwide, giving casual listeners access to songs fans had kept alive for years.

Layover: the official solo debut

V released his debut EP Layover on September 8, 2023. ADOR creative director Min Hee-jin led the project’s overall production and visual direction. That credit is historically part of the record even though later corporate disputes made her name combustible. The album contains “Rainy Days,” “Blue,” “Love Me Again,” “Slow Dancing,” “For Us” and a piano version of “Slow Dancing.”

Instead of chasing the loudest possible solo debut, V made a short R&B and pop record built around repetition, atmosphere and unhurried vocals. “Love Me Again” opens in a glittering cave with a lonely karaoke quality. “Rainy Days” watches ordinary domestic time pass. “Blue” repeats its request until impatience becomes the structure. “Slow Dancing” lets the flute outro wander after a K-pop single would normally have delivered one final explosion. “For Us” shifts pitch and texture around a relationship that cannot be restored.

Layover sold more than 2.1 million copies in its first week on Hanteo, then the highest first-week total for a K-pop solo artist. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, tying the highest placement then achieved by a Korean soloist. It also reached No. 1 in South Korea and posted strong chart results in Japan and Europe. The commercial scale matters because the album did not sound engineered for maximum-impact choreography or a shouted hook. Fans followed him into the quiet.

Promotions included performances on Korean music programs, Band Session material, Tiny Desk Korea, Japanese appearances and fan events. The live arrangements clarified what the studio record was doing. V was not trying to prove he could out-sing every vocalist in pop. He was building a room where his tone, phrasing and taste controlled the pace.

After Layover

“Wherever U R,” a collaboration with UMI, was released on V’s birthday in December 2023 while he was serving in the military. In March 2024, “FRI(END)S” arrived as an English-language pop-soul single. Its video contrasts coupled domestic happiness with a single man’s increasingly surreal irritation before flipping the premise.

“Winter Ahead,” a jazz-pop collaboration with Park Hyo-shin, followed in November 2024. The pairing made sense: Park Hyo-shin is one of the Korean vocalists V has long admired, and the arrangement fit his preference for older pop and jazz textures. A holiday version extended the seasonal atmosphere. He also released a version of “White Christmas” connected to Bing Crosby’s archive, placing his voice beside one of the classic crooners associated with the music he loves.

V returned from military service in June 2025 and rejoined BTS’s full-group preparations. His solo file is therefore not finished at Layover. It is simply the clearest statement so far of what happens when he chooses the entire room rather than one solo moment inside a BTS album.

Voice, performance and visual taste

V is a baritone in a pop industry that often privileges brighter tenor placement. His lower register gives BTS a contrasting color, while “Stigma” demonstrated a much higher falsetto range than early position labels suggested. Critics have repeatedly noted the husky tone, the soothing lower range and the way his voice can make a track feel older than the production around it.

His major influences include jazz, classical music, R&B and vocalists such as Eric Benét and Ruben Studdard. He has publicly admired Park Hyo-shin and other singers who prioritize tone and phrasing. This does not mean every V performance is technically flawless. His appeal is not a laboratory claim about having the widest range. It is recognizability. One line is usually enough to know who entered the song.

On stage, fans and critics often describe his “duality,” a fandom word that can become meaningless if applied to every idol who smiles backstage and looks serious during a concept photo. With V, the useful part is his camera awareness. He performs to the lens without always making the gesture large. During “Singularity,” tiny delays and expressions carry as much weight as the choreography. MTV and NME writers have specifically noted his use of live cameras and the deliberate quality of his movement.

Photography became another part of his public identity. He used the name Vante, inspired by photographer Ante Badzim, for personal photography and cover images. His taste leans toward film grain, vintage styling, European cinema, classic menswear and scenes that appear discovered rather than overlit for idol perfection. Layover turned that taste into an entire campaign.

Impact, influence and “I purple you”

At a BTS fan meeting in November 2016, V explained that purple is the last color of the rainbow and told fans, “I purple you,” using it to mean lasting trust and love. The phrase spread through ARMY until purple lighting, hearts and projects became part of BTS’s global visual language. UNICEF used the phrase in connection with its anti-bullying work with BTS. Landmarks have been illuminated purple for the group. A spontaneous fan-meeting sentence became branding no corporate meeting could have manufactured as effectively.

Search studies and popularity surveys repeatedly placed V among the most visible Korean idols. Gallup Korea ranked him among the country’s preferred idols, and Japanese popularity reporting documented long runs at the top of Korean-celebrity rankings. In December 2021, his personal Instagram account set Guinness World Records for the fastest account to reach one million and ten million followers. The speed was not a mysterious algorithm accident. Fans had waited years for the members to open individual accounts.

Younger idols who have named V as a role model or influence include performers from The Boyz, Golden Child, CRAVITY, ATEEZ, TXT and other groups. Influence is difficult to measure cleanly, but the performance style is visible across later generations: lower-voiced idols studying his facial control, fashion shoots borrowing his vintage elegance, and trainees naming him when asked which senior artist they watch.

Fashion, ambassadors and public campaigns

V became a global ambassador for Celine in 2023 after years of association with the brand’s shows and clothing. He also became a Cartier ambassador and fronted the Panthère de Cartier campaign. His endorsements have included SimInvest, Compose Coffee and other regional campaigns. Seoul Tourism appointed him an honorary tourism ambassador in 2023.

Fashion coverage often treats any airport coat as a cultural event, so it helps to separate actual contracts from fan enthusiasm. Celine and Cartier were formal ambassador relationships. His broader fashion reputation came from a mix of editorial shoots, personal vintage taste, stage styling and the fact that luxury houses know one post can move global attention.

Friends, Yeontan, health and philanthropy

V’s most public friendships outside BTS are the Wooga Squad. In the Soop: Friendcation showed the group traveling, cooking, teasing one another and talking about their careers without turning the friendship into a competition. He later joined Park Seo-joon and Choi Woo-shik on Jinny’s Kitchen, where he worked as an intern under Lee Seo-jin. The show gave viewers a different V: competitive about small employee privileges, tired from kitchen work, and still able to turn one expression into a meme.

His Pomeranian, Yeontan, became one of the most famous pets in K-pop. Yeontan appeared in photos, broadcasts and the Layover campaign, and even joined V onstage for a performance. V announced in December 2024 that Yeontan had died. He had previously discussed the dog’s health problems. Fans responded as people who had watched the animal grow alongside BTS, not as if a marketing mascot had been retired.

In October 2018, illness affected his singing during a Paris concert. In October 2021, a calf injury prevented him from participating fully in choreography for Permission to Dance on Stage; he performed seated instead. These incidents were temporary, but they belong in a career chronology that otherwise makes nonstop touring look physically consequence-free.

In March 2025, while serving in the military, V donated 200 million won through the Korean Red Cross to support recovery from wildfires in Ulsan, North Gyeongsang and South Gyeongsang. Fanbases also organize birthday projects and donations in his name, but those should be credited to the fans unless he personally funded or directed them.

Military service

BIGHIT announced in November 2023 that V, RM, Jimin and Jung Kook had begun their enlistment process. V enlisted on December 11, 2023, alongside RM. After additional training, he was assigned to the Ssangyong Unit of the 2nd Corps and served in the Military Police Special Duty Team, commonly described as SDT.

Photos and accounts of his military period drew enormous attention, including discussion of his physical training and weight gain. The useful fact is simpler: he deliberately pursued a demanding assignment, completed service and was discharged on June 10, 2025. RM welcomed the moment with a saxophone. V greeted the press, thanked fans and stepped back into a BTS reunion process that had been waiting on all seven members.
