Early life
Kang Seul-gi joined SM Entertainment in 2007 and trained for roughly seven years. She was introduced through SM Rookies before becoming one of Red Velvet’s four original members.
Career
Seulgi became known as one of her generation’s strongest all-round performers. Alongside group work, she debuted in Irene & Seulgi, joined the project supergroup GOT the Beat and built a solo catalog beginning with 28 Reasons.
Why she matters in Red Velvet
Her dancing is clean without becoming sterile, and her slightly smoky vocal color gives Red Velvet weight when the production turns darker. She can sell cute, elegant, eerie and aggressive concepts without looking like she borrowed somebody else’s personality.

Seven trainee years before one debut
Kang Seul-gi was born February 10, 1994, in Ansan. She entered SM in 2007 and trained for roughly seven years. That is an entire middle-school and high-school era spent being evaluated. She was introduced through SM Rookies in 2013 and appeared in pre-debut performances before Red Velvet launched in 2014.
The long training period built the rare idol who can sing like a main vocalist and dance like the performance center without visibly negotiating between those skills. Seulgi’s lines are clean, but not sterile. Her shoulders, hands, and gaze finish movements other dancers technically complete and emotionally abandon.
Red Velvet’s hinge
Red Velvet’s “red” and “velvet” sides need different types of commitment. Seulgi is the hinge. She can sell the manic brightness of “Dumb Dumb,” the R&B cool of “Bad Boy,” the horror-pop tension of “Peek-A-Boo,” and the ritual beauty of “Cosmic” without looking like four separate performers sharing one name.
28 Reasons, Irene & Seulgi, and her own strange little room
The Irene & Seulgi subunit isolated her precision and darker performance instincts. Her 2022 solo debut 28 Reasons went further, building a morally slippery character around temptation, control, and the pleasure of not explaining whether she was the villain. Later solo work, including Accidentally on Purpose, expanded the sound without sanding down the oddness.
Art, photography, and style
Seulgi draws, photographs, and approaches fashion like composition rather than a billboard requirement. Her visual sense shows in album concepts and solo imagery. She understands negative space. Bless her for not putting twelve symbols in a frame just because somebody paid for twelve symbols.
