She had already debuted once
Before YG, Ruka performed in Japan’s Shibu3 project under Platinum Production. She joined the Blue Class as a founding member in 2017 and left in 2018. Shibu3 was not a miniature version of BABYMONSTER. It was a youth idol and performance project with a very different budget, system and audience. What it gave her was the unglamorous experience fact boxes skip: rehearsals with other people, small-stage responsibility, public schedules and the knowledge that “debut” does not magically finish your training.
She had also trained seriously in hip-hop dance from childhood. That foundation is why her movement reads differently from a member who learned choreography mainly inside an idol company. She understands groove before formation, weight before prettiness, and how to make a pause look intentional instead of forgotten.
The long YG file
Ruka auditioned with DJ Khaled’s “Top Off” and joined YG in 2018. She trained for roughly five years before the public BABYMONSTER introductions, longer than anyone else in the final lineup. YG revealed her last, in February 2023, which gave the introduction a strange kind of suspense: the oldest member and one of the longest-trained performers arrived after viewers had already started building theories around everyone else.
In Last Evaluation, she ranked second in the final announcement. Her value was not mystery. It was reliability. She could carry rap tone, lead movement cleanup, and steady younger members without the company formally assigning a leader.
The movement file: groove before decoration
Dance
Ruka’s specialty is hip-hop. Her strongest stages use a low center of gravity, clean isolations and timing that sits inside the beat instead of chasing it. She does not need the largest gesture to look in control. Watch transitions: she finishes one shape while already preparing the next, which is why formations look calmer around her.
Her own line about dancing until she dies sounds dramatic until you look at the years. Then it sounds like a schedule.
Rap
Her rap voice is lower and rougher than Asa’s brighter precision. That contrast lets BABYMONSTER build exchanges instead of two rappers competing for the same texture. Ruka sells attitude through pocket and physicality. Even when the written verse is simple, she makes it feel lived in rather than recited for evaluation.
Being the oldest without becoming the group’s substitute parent
Ruka is several years older than most of the lineup, but BABYMONSTER does not need a twenty-something woman flattened into “the mom.” Behind-the-scenes material shows her helping with choreography, relaxing tense rooms and watching younger members carefully. It also shows a person who laughs easily, enjoys Pilates, and does not spend every meal delivering wisdom under soft lighting.
The more useful description is cultural and practical bridge. She entered YG as a Japanese trainee, became fluent enough in Korean to work and joke naturally, then debuted beside Asa as one of the company’s first Japanese female idols. That path is part language school, part homesickness management and part relentless evaluation. The dance line is only the visible half.
Fandom notes and things the fact box misses
- The moles: fans recognize the beauty marks around her eye almost as quickly as the low rap tone.
- Shibu3 receipts: old performance clips matter because they show she did not appear fully formed in a YG basement. The control has a visible childhood history.
- Dance leader language: members and behind-the-scenes clips treat her as a movement reference. “Dance leader” is useful descriptive shorthand, not an official corporate position.
- Ruka and Asa: the two Japanese rappers share language, trainee history and contrasting delivery. Their chemistry is collaboration, not a permanent two-person ranking contest.
- Oldest member jokes: she is older than the group’s average by enough years for fandom to turn every reaction into “unnie mode.” Sometimes she is helping. Sometimes she is simply standing there with a face.

The lazy version says “dreamy.” The more fun Ruka version is somebody who reads rhythm and other bodies quickly, then adjusts without turning the adjustment into an announcement.
