ZEROBASEONE

ZEROBASEONE members Sung Han Bin, Kim Ji Woong, Seok Matthew, Kim Tae Rae and Park Gun Wook

ZEROBASEONE began as nine boys chosen by millions of viewers, promoted with an expiration date hanging over every comeback, and then did the very K-pop thing of making the ending complicated. The original nine completed their project run in March 2026. Five members kept the name moving. The history still belongs to all nine.

Former members from the original nine

Former does not mean erased. Zhang Hao, Ricky, Kim Gyuvin, and Han Yujin recorded the group’s first era, including “SLAM DUNK,” and remain part of any honest ZEROBASEONE history.

How this group happened

Mnet built ZEROBASEONE through BOYS PLANET, a 2023 survival show that split Korean and global trainees before slowly mixing them into one competition. The finale selected nine members by audience vote. Zhang Hao ranked first, making him the first non-Korean contestant to win a Mnet idol survival series. Sung Hanbin, the signal-song center and long-running number-one trainee, ranked second and later became leader.

The name means moving from zero to one, then writing the rest together with fans. It is corporate algebra, yes, but the members sold the emotional part. Their fandom name, ZEROSE, combines ZEROBASEONE with rose.

The nine-member era

Youth in the Shade debuted at number one with “In Bloom” and made them an immediate million seller. The run moved through the colder drama of “CRUSH,” the pop cinema of “Feel the POP” and “GOOD SO BAD,” the R&B pleading of “Doctor! Doctor!,” then the 2025 full album NEVER SAY NEVER. “SLAM DUNK” arrived as its sweaty basketball pre-release before “ICONIK” carried the album proper.

The project contract was always temporary. WAKEONE extended the full nine-member activities by two months so scheduled concerts and promotions could finish. When that extension ended in March 2026, the four Yuehua members returned to their agency. Jiwoong, Hanbin, Matthew, Taerae, and Gunwook continued as a five-member ZEROBASEONE.

The five-member continuation

The new lineup did not pretend the first era never existed. That would have been insulting and also impossible. Instead, the group’s public language framed the five as a continuation. Fewer voices change line distribution, visual geometry, and the emotional meaning of the name. Hanbin remains leader; Taerae carries a larger vocal load; Matthew and Gunwook cover more structural ground; Jiwoong balances acting with group work.

Music and performance identity

ZEROBASEONE works best when polish and panic occupy the same song. Their catalog loves youth, time, fate, beginnings, and the fear that a beautiful moment may already be ending. The members are technically strong enough to sell glossy pop, but the project-group clock gave ordinary romantic lines a second meaning. “Stay with me” was never just flirting when everybody knew the contract date.
