Before debut: LASTART and the maknae problem
Sakuya became public through NCT Universe: LASTART, where trainees competed for places in NCT’s final expansion unit. He was the youngest person selected for the team. That fact explains the “maknae” label, but it does not explain why he made it. The useful answer is adaptability: he could sell youthful material without disappearing when the choreography sharpened or the arrangement demanded more attitude.
The lineup first released music as NCT NEW TEAM before becoming NCT WISH. Sakuya moved through that pre-debut period with Sion, Riku, Yushi, Jaehee and Ryo, then officially debuted with them in February 2024.
NCT WISH career
The group’s official debut single “WISH” established its Korean-Japanese structure and the bright “wish for our wish” identity. Sakuya continued through “Songbird,” Steady, poppop, COLOR, the Japanese WISHLIST era, and 2026 releases including “Sticky,” “Ode to Love,” “BOY MEETS GIRL” and “YO-I-DON!”
His function is especially visible when a WISH track needs personality between its melodic peaks.
