Jay Chang Won Build Up, and the Prize Made Him Miss ONE PACT’s Comeback

Jay Chang won a survival show. Excellent. His prize was a new project group, a second agency schedule, and the inability to join his original group’s next comeback. K-pop can turn good news into a shared-calendar emergency faster than any industry I have ever seen.
- On May 16, 2024, ARMADA said Jay would not participate in ONE PACT’s upcoming PARADOXX album activities.
- The stated reason was his first-place finish on Mnet’s Build Up.
- Winning placed him in the project vocal group B.D.U, which promoted under a different agency.
- ARMADA continued to identify ONE PACT as five members. Jay was absent from one era, not quietly erased from the group.
Why fans were upset even though nobody had technically done anything wrong
Jay did exactly what an idol is told to do on a survival show: compete, sing like rent is due, win, and accept the opportunity. ONE PACT also needed to keep building momentum. The problem was structural. Two valid careers tried to use the same person at the same time.
PARADOXX leaned heavily on TAG’s writing and the four available members. They did good work. It was still impossible not to hear the empty space where the group’s main vocalist usually changes the scale of a chorus. Fans worried because temporary project groups have a funny habit of making “temporary scheduling” feel like an open tab nobody closes.
What happened later
Jay returned to ONE PACT work when schedules allowed and participated in the five-member ONE FACT era. That matters. The absence was not evidence of a secret departure. It was evidence that multi-agency arrangements are complicated and K-pop announcements often arrive after fans have already noticed the missing chair.
