NCT is the project-level recording act used for ensemble albums and songs bringing the wider system together. This is the music profile, not the instruction manual. What belongs under NCT
Follow the credit, not the album cover. An NCT album can contain NCT U songs and permanent-unit songs. Those tracks remain with their credited groups. The NCT tracker contains ensemble videos credited to NCT, NCT 2018, NCT 2020, NCT 2021 or NCT 2023.
This distinction prevents the NCT page from swallowing every video released by every unit. NCT 127’s “Fact Check,” NCT DREAM’s “CHILLER,” WayV’s “Vision Wings” and NCT WISH’s “WISH” do not belong here. “Black on Black,” “RESONANCE,” “Beautiful” and “Golden Age” do.
Project albums
NCT 2018 Empathy
The first full NCT project album assembled the system’s existing releases and new songs across NCT U, NCT 127, NCT DREAM and the NCT 2018 ensemble. “Black on Black” became the large-scale performance statement, while “BOSS,” “Baby Don’t Stop” and “YESTODAY” belonged to NCT U.
NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 1 and Pt. 2
The Resonance project expanded to twenty-three members and introduced Shotaro and Sungchan. Its track list functioned like a controlled collision between units: “Make A Wish,” “From Home,” “90’s Love” and “Work It” used separate NCT U lineups, while “RESONANCE” combined material into the project-level finale.
Universe
The 2021 album continued the multi-credit model. NCT U carried “Universe (Let’s Play Ball),” while “Beautiful” presented NCT 2021 as a large ensemble. The album demonstrates why a single album cannot automatically feed one tracker.
Golden Age
The fourth NCT studio album arrived in 2023 with ten tracks. “Baggy Jeans” reunited the original five-member NCT U debut team. “Golden Age” used the NCT 2023 ensemble credit. SM described the album as a collection of varied member combinations, which is the project concept functioning exactly as advertised and absolutely refusing to fit inside a short bio.
Ensemble songs and project eras
Black on Black: the NCT 2018 performance release translated scale into choreography. It is less a conventional vocal showcase than a statement that the system could put a very large roster on one stage without requiring airport traffic control.
RESONANCE: NCT 2020’s project finale fused material from the Resonance era. Its purpose is connective rather than unit-specific, so the video belongs to NCT.
Beautiful: NCT 2021 moved away from intimidation and toward reassurance, distributing lines and screen time across a broad ensemble.
Golden Age: NCT 2023 reworked Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 8, “Pathétique,” into a project anthem. The classical reference, modern production and multi-member arrangement made the title an unusually literal summary of SM’s preferred combination of inherited prestige and futuristic branding.
Participating members and why the roster changes by era
NCT’s ensemble roster follows the members active for each project album. Empathy reflects the 2018 system. Resonance reflects the twenty-three-member 2020 system. Universe and Golden Age use their own era-specific pools. Former members retain historical credits even when they no longer belong to the current project.
The current unit network is documented in the umbrella hub. This music profile does not pretend every current member has appeared on the same NCT-credited recording, and it does not erase Taeil, Lucas, Shotaro, Sungchan, Winwin or Mark from releases they actually made.
Musical identity
NCT ensemble music tends to prioritize scale, contrast and the symbolic job of bringing the project together. Unit songs can develop stable musical identities. NCT songs have to make dozens of histories feel connected. The result moves between performance-driven electronic music, anthem structures, layered vocal sections and arrangements designed to pass attention through a large roster.
The best project releases do not merely stack members. They make the changing voices part of the composition. The worst risk is obvious: when everybody needs a moment, a song can start feeling like roll call with a production budget. The strongest NCT ensemble work avoids that by using sections, textures and movement rather than pretending twenty people should share one conventional pop verse equally.
