1. Early career
Before KARD, Somin trained and promoted through several DSP Media projects. She appeared in the 2014 survival program Kara Project, which followed trainees competing for a place in KARA. She later debuted as the leader of APRIL in August 2015 and left the group that November. Those early chapters matter because they show how long she had already been navigating idol life before KARD found the format that fit her voice.
2. KARD
Somin joined BM, J.Seph and Jiwoo in KARD’s co-ed lineup. The group introduced itself through pre-debut project singles beginning with “Oh NaNa” in December 2016, then officially debuted with the EP Hola Hola on July 19, 2017. Somin’s tone became one of the group’s anchors across its mix of dance-pop, tropical house, Latin-influenced rhythm and darker club production.
KARD also gave Somin room to work beyond a conventional fixed-role idol template. Her stage presence can pivot from controlled and elegant to sharp and playful, while her lower, textured vocal color often balances Jiwoo’s attack and the male members’ rap passages. 3. Solo career
Somin made her formal solo debut on April 2, 2026 with the seven-track EP UNVEIL. The title track “Backseat” was released with an official music video through KARD’s channel. UNVEIL presents Somin outside the shared architecture of a KARD track. “Backseat” leads with a minimal beat, deep bass and synth-driven pop production, leaving space for her voice and performance personality to carry the record. Somin’s career is the kind that makes “overnight success” sound especially silly. Puretty, Kara Project, APRIL, KARD, and then finally a solo EP: that is not a straight line, it is a whole subway map. UNVEIL works because it does not pretend those years never happened. “Backseat” feels like someone who already knows exactly how a camera, a beat and a room full of fans behave, then decides she would like the steering wheel now. Fair enough. She waited long enough.
