Journey to the West | Chapter 003
When Play Starts to Look Like War
四海千山皆拱伏
九幽十類盡除名
Chapter Intro
This chapter marks the moment when Sun Wu Kong stops playing at leadership and begins becoming a ruler. What started as lighthearted training on Hua Guo Shan, Flower–Fruit Mountain now brushes against the boundaries of real kingdoms and real power. A wooden spear is harmless until thousands of them move in formation. A noisy mountain is innocent until the world mistakes it for an army.
As Wu Kong searches for true weapons and a way to protect his people, his choices ripple far beyond his home. His arrival no longer goes unnoticed. Human kings grow uneasy, dragons feel the pressure of his presence, and even the underworld stirs at his name. Each step forward pulls him deeper into responsibilities he never asked for but refuses to run from.
This is the turning point where a carefree monkey begins to understand the cost of strength… and the world finally starts to look back.
Sun Wu Kong returns to Hua Guo Shan, Flower-Fruit Mountain after defeating the Hun Shi Mo Wang, bringing safety back to his tribe. With their crisis resolved, he resumes training the monkeys, but soon realizes that their bamboo weapons and playful drills could be mistaken for rebellion. If a human king or beast lord misinterprets their practice, the mountain could face real danger.
Concerned for his troop, Wu Kong decides they must obtain true weapons. Four elder monkeys guide him toward the human kingdom of Ao Lai (傲來), located two hundred li across the sea. Wu Kong travels there instantly using his Somersault Cloud and clears out the kingdom’s entire armory using a storm spell and his hair-duplicate technique. He returns home with enough steel to arm every monkey.
With real weapons, Hua Guo Shan becomes a rising force. News spreads quickly. Beast kings from seventy-two surrounding caves arrive to pay respects. They bring armor, drums, banners, and tribute, acknowledging Wu Kong as their superior. The mountain grows into a fortified stronghold.
Yet Wu Kong feels dissatisfied. His current blade is crude and unworthy of his skill. The elder monkeys then reveal a hidden path beneath the Iron Plate Bridge that leads directly to the Eastern Sea Dragon Palace (東海龍宮).
Wu Kong travels underwater to meet the Dragon King Ao Guang (敖廣), who tries offering him several powerful weapons. Wu Kong rejects them as too light. Eventually, at the urging of the dragon matriarch, Ao Guang reveals the legendary Ruyi Jingu Bang (如意金箍棒), a divine iron pillar that adjusts itself to Wu Kong’s wishes. Delighted, Wu Kong takes the weapon and demands matching armor.
Unable to resist, the Four Sea Dragon Kings collectively supply him with:
a golden phoenix-wing crown
a golden chainmail shirt
Fully armed, Wu Kong leaves the Dragon Palace. The Dragon Kings immediately submits a complaint to Heaven about the Monkey King.
Back on the mountain, Wu Kong demonstrates the Ruyi Jingu Bang’s ability to shrink to a needle and grow to an enormous size, astonishing his followers. The seventy-two cave lords reaffirm their loyalty.
One day, after a feast with his six sworn demon brothers, Wu Kong falls asleep under a tree. Two ghost messengers arrive to seize his soul and bring him to the Underworld (幽冥界). Wu Kong resists, kills the messengers, and storms the city. Reaching the Hall of the Ten Kings, he demands the Book of Life and Death.
There he finds his own entry and erases it, along with the entries for all monkeys. By doing so, he frees his entire race from the control of life and death.
He then awakens back on the mountain, realizing the experience was both dreamlike and real. His followers celebrate, now understanding that no monkey under Sun Wu Kong is bound by mortal lifespan.
Meanwhile, both the Dragon Kings and the Underworld submit formal complaints to Heaven. Each reports that Sun Wu Kong has disrupted divine order. The Jade Emperor prepares to send heavenly forces, but the immortal Tai Bai Jin Xing (太白金星) advises a different approach: invite Wu Kong to Heaven and restrain him through official appointment rather than force.
The Jade Emperor agrees and issues a decree.
The chapter closes with Sun Wu Kong receiving a celestial summons and preparing to travel to Heaven for the first time, unaware that this invitation is not the honor he imagines, but the beginning of Heaven’s attempt to control him.
After returning to Hua Guo Shan, Flower-Fruit Mountain, Sun Wu Kong, Monkey King (孫悟空) began training his troop again. The monkeys practiced with bamboo spears and wooden blades, copying the formations he taught them. Over time, their drills started to resemble actual military practice.
This made Wu Kong uneasy. If a human ruler or powerful monster misunderstood these activities as rebellion, the mountain could be attacked. His troop only had wooden weapons and would not be able to defend themselves. Wu Kong realized they needed real steel.
Four elder monkeys advised him that two hundred li east of the mountain lay the sea, and beyond it the human kingdom of Ao Lai (傲來). Skilled smiths there produced metal weapons. Wu Kong used his Somersault Cloud to travel instantly, then cleared out the kingdom’s armory using a storm spell and his hair-duplication technique. He returned home with enough weapons to arm every monkey.
With real weapons, the troop grew confident. Daily drills echoed across the valley. The presence of steel soon attracted the attention of surrounding monster clans. Seventy-two cave lords came to the mountain to acknowledge Wu Kong’s strength. They offered tribute, armor, banners, and drums, requesting alliance and protection. Hua Guo Shan gradually transformed into a fortified and organized stronghold.
Despite this growth, Wu Kong remained unsatisfied. His personal blade felt crude and unworthy of someone who had cultivated the Dao. The elder monkeys then revealed a hidden waterway beneath the Iron Plate Bridge that led directly to the Eastern Sea Dragon Palace, Donghai Longgong (東海龍宮). They encouraged him to ask the Dragon King Ao Guang (敖廣) for a proper weapon.
Wu Kong entered the sea and reached the Dragon Palace. The Dragon King welcomed him reluctantly and first offered a large saber, then a heavy trident, and then a powerful halberd. Wu Kong found all of them too light. At the suggestion of the dragon matriarch, Ao Guang revealed a massive iron pillar known as the Ruyi Jingu Bang (如意金箍棒). The pillar adjusted in size at Wu Kong’s request, shrinking until it became the perfect weapon for him. Delighted, Wu Kong accepted it immediately.
He then demanded armor to match. Ao Guang had none suitable, so the Four Sea Dragon Kings gathered together and supplied him with a golden phoenix-wing crown, a golden chainmail shirt, and cloud-stepping boots. With these treasures and the Ruyi Jingu Bang, Wu Kong left the palace satisfied. The Dragon Kings, relieved but frustrated, filed a formal complaint to Heaven.
Back on the mountain, Wu Kong demonstrated the staff’s ability to shrink into a needle and expand to enormous size. The monkeys were amazed. The seventy-two cave lords renewed their allegiance, recognizing Wu Kong’s growing power.
Some time later, after sharing wine with his six sworn demon brothers, Wu Kong fell asleep under a tree. Two ghost messengers arrived to capture his soul and escort him to the Underworld, Youming Jie (幽冥界). Wu Kong resisted, killed the messengers, and forced his way into the city. He confronted the Ten Kings of the Underworld and demanded the Book of Life and Death.
Upon finding his entry, Wu Kong erased his name and then erased the names of every monkey. This act freed his entire race from mortal lifespan. He then left the Underworld and awoke back on the mountain, realizing the experience had been both dreamlike and real. His troop celebrated, understanding that none of them were bound by life or death any longer.
Meanwhile, the Underworld reported the incident to Heaven. The Dragon Kings submitted their own complaint about the stolen treasures and destruction in the palace. Both matters reached the Jade Emperor.
Heaven debated sending troops to arrest Wu Kong, but Tai Bai Jin Xing (太白金星) advised a different strategy. Instead of using force, Heaven should invite Wu Kong into the celestial bureaucracy and restrain him through an official appointment. The Jade Emperor agreed and issued a decree.
A heavenly envoy soon arrived at Hua Guo Shan, carrying a summons for Wu Kong to present himself in Heaven. Wu Kong accepted eagerly, unaware that Heaven intended to control him rather than honor him.
