These are the published sources behind the timeline. RaeRae commentary is mine. Claims remain claims unless the linked reporting confirms them.

XG kept the initials and changed the entire meaning.

No rebrand circus. No new logo funeral. Just one word swapped days before the album, and suddenly four years of alien DNA lore clicked into place.

On January 12, 2026, XGALX announced that XG no longer means “Xtraordinary Girls.” It means “Xtraordinary Genes.” The letters stayed. The group stayed. The explanation widened: “Genes” represents the creativity and power inside each member, plus their refusal to be boxed in by normal rules.

That is the official version, and it makes perfect business sense. XG had outgrown a name that sounded tied to age and gender. Every member had reached adulthood. Their first full album, THE CORE – 核, was eleven days away. Their entire catalog had already been leaving DNA crumbs everywhere: NEW DNA, “X-GENE,” alien imagery, mutation, evolution, cores, wolves, and a group identity built around not fitting the available categories.

But everybody noticed the timing

The announcement came a little over a month after Cocona publicly came out as transmasculine and nonbinary on their twentieth birthday. XGALX did not officially say the rename happened because of Cocona, so I am not turning fan math into a company statement. That distinction matters.

Still, fans immediately read the change as more than album marketing. Keeping “Girls” after a member told the world that label no longer fit would have created a contradiction every time someone expanded the acronym. “Genes” solved it without erasing the group’s history or forcing Cocona’s identity into a corporate press release. Quietly smart is still smart.

Why “Genes” actually works

This is one of those rare K-pop rebrands that does not require a flowchart and an apology video. The pronunciation does not change. The searchable name does not change. ALPHAZ do not need new tattoos. Even older merchandise still reads “XG.” Only the meaning underneath it moves.

It also fits the group better. XG are seven Japanese performers, developed by XGALX, working largely from South Korea, releasing English-language music, and refusing to sit politely inside K-pop, J-pop, or Western pop. “Girls” described the lineup. “Genes” describes the project: take different influences, splice them together, and see what mutates.

The tiny merch detail that proves this was real

XGALX updated packaging for the official light stick and trading cards to reflect “Xtraordinary Genes.” The hardware did not need to change; the words on the package did. That is wonderfully literal proof of how the whole rebrand worked. Same object. New reading.

RaeRae verdict

The company statement is polished, but the choice underneath it is genuinely good. It respects where XG started, matches the lore they have been building for years, and gives every member room to exist without one outdated noun hovering over them. Also, “Xtraordinary Genes” sounds exactly like something seven glamorous extraterrestrials would stamp on a laboratory door before stealing the building.
