Tzuyu May Leave JYP Without Leaving TWICE—and Yes, That Difference Matters

What actually happened

On July 14, 2026, Korean reports said Tzuyu had decided not to renew her exclusive contract with JYP Entertainment after eleven years. That headline immediately mutated into a much larger claim: Tzuyu was leaving TWICE, TWICE was disbanding, the tour finale had been a funeral and everybody should begin emotionally pricing nine separate light sticks.

JYP did not confirm the departure. The agency said TWICE was in a contract-renewal discussion period and that it would announce the result when matters were finalized. SBS, Korea JoongAng Daily, The Korea Times, Edaily and Soompi all carried versions of the same essential distinction: a report said Tzuyu might leave the company; JYP said negotiations were still ongoing.

Translation for people whose timeline is screaming: “reported” is not “signed,” “leaving JYP” is not automatically “leaving TWICE,” and “nothing finalized” is not secret confirmation of whichever outcome scares you most.

Why the contract language is confusing on purpose

An idol can have more than one working relationship. A group contract covers group recordings, tours, branding and schedules. An individual contract may cover solo music, acting, endorsements, television and management. Those agreements can sit under one company, or they can be split. K-pop already has senior groups whose members use different agencies for individual careers while returning to one company—or a jointly negotiated structure—for group work.

That means Tzuyu could theoretically leave JYP for solo management and remain a TWICE member. It would require scheduling, rights and money to be negotiated like adults, which is less dramatic than a disbandment edit but considerably more realistic. BLACKPINK’s four members created a very visible version of this structure after renewing for group activity while moving individual careers elsewhere. Girls’ Generation, GOT7, EXID and other groups have shown different arrangements.

The 2022 renewal is part of the receipts

All nine TWICE members renewed with JYP in July 2022 before their original seven-year contracts expired. That first renewal was group-wide and public. Four years later, the members are negotiating from a different position: a decade of sales, tours, Japanese stadium dates, Billboard results, solo albums, MISAMO, acting work and a catalog large enough to require its own filing cabinet.

Second renewals are not loyalty ceremonies. They are business negotiations between adults whose individual careers no longer fit inside one debut-era template. Tzuyu has a solo EP, abouTZU, a major Taiwanese market connection and eleven years of evidence about what JYP does well and what it does not. If she wants different solo management, that is not an attack on TWICE. It may be the most practical way to protect both identities.
