The Sherbrooke Brides

The largest single run in this Library, and it hides behind three shelf entries. Two omnibus bundles carry ten novels between them, and one more sits on its own.

The shelf

Three entries, eleven books

This is the biggest holding in the Library and it very nearly went uncounted. On the shelf it appears as three lines. Two of those lines are omnibus bundles: The Sherbrooke Series Novels 1–5 and Novels 6–10, and the third is a single late volume. Counted properly that is eleven complete novels, more than any other series here, and more than the Bridgerton run.

It also means this is effectively a complete run. The Sherbrooke books number eleven in the standard listing, and all eleven are on this shelf.

A note on the numbering. Different bibliographies count this series differently, because Coulter wrote it across nearly twenty years and some listings fold in related titles. The shelf records the final volume as book twelve; the common listing puts it at eleven. What matters for the Library is that the run is unbroken from the first book to the last.

The run

All eleven, in order

1The Sherbrooke Bride · 1992 2The Hellion Bride · 1992 3The Heiress Bride · 1992 4Mad Jack · 1999 5The Courtship · 2000 6The Scottish Bride · 2001 7Pendragon · 2001 8The Sherbrooke Twins · 2004 9Lyon’s Gate · 2005 10Wizard’s Daughter · 2007 11Prince of Ravenscar · 2011

The first three arrived in a single year and the rest came out across the following two decades, which shows in them. This is not a trilogy that grew; it is a family Coulter kept returning to, and the later books follow children of the earlier couples rather than continuing the original romances.

The opening

Where it starts

Book one · 1992The Sherbrooke BrideDouglas Sherbrooke, Earl of Northcliffe, needs a wife because he needs an heir, and the book opens on that as a piece of estate management rather than a romance. Everything else in eleven novels descends from this marriage.
Book eleven · 2011Prince of RavenscarThe last of the run, published nineteen years after the first. By this point the Sherbrookes are a large extended family and the book reads as a return visit rather than an introduction.

Reading order: the books are written to stand alone and Coulter designed them that way, but the extended family accumulates. Reading in order is the difference between meeting the Sherbrookes and merely being introduced to them repeatedly.

Method

Why omnibuses matter for this Library

An omnibus is a single purchase that hides a run of books. Counted by shelf entries this series looked like three titles and would have ranked below a three-book trilogy. Counted by novels it is the largest holding here by some distance.

That is worth flagging because there may be others. Any shelf line whose title contains a range of numbers is worth opening before it gets filed as one book.

Nothing here has been read directly. The series order, publication years and the opening premise come from standard series bibliographies, cross-checked across more than one source. Individual plots for books two through ten are not described on this page because they were not verified; listing eleven titles accurately is a better outcome than summarising ten of them from guesswork.
Covers: only one of eleven could be retrieved. Open Library returns blank placeholders for the rest, the Google Books service is over its daily quota from this address, and the Barnes & Noble image host refuses direct requests.
