Gayageum and pansori came before the cowboy boots

Roah studied gayageum, the Korean plucked zither, and pansori, a demanding narrative vocal tradition built around breath, rhythm, dramatic phrasing and a relationship with the drummer. Korean coverage introduced her as KIIRAS’s “gugak girl” because the record included actual competitions and public traditional-music appearances, not one concept photo holding an instrument.

Secondary archives document awards including recognition at national traditional-arts competition level and participation connected to KBS’s Gugak Hanmadang. Exact award titles should remain tied to their original programs, but the larger fact is firm: she trained her ears, breath and storytelling before pop production compressed those skills into three minutes.

The idol voice should grow without being used as a circus trick

Roah’s KIIRAS singing is not pansori and should not imitate it. The connection is technical. She already understands how a line can stretch, where breath changes meaning and how vocal color carries character. A company can misuse a young main vocalist by chasing louder, higher and earlier. The better route is steady range development, safe technique, appropriate material and enough live experience for consistency to catch up with potential.
