Muses of Mayfair

Four Regency romances about women with secret creative lives. An actress, a novelist, a forger, each of them doing work the ton would destroy her for, and each of them very good at it.

The concept

The muse is the heroine, not the man looking at her

The title is doing more work than it looks like it is. In the Regency the word muse means a woman who inspires a man to make something. Ramsey inverts it. Every heroine in this series is the one actually making the thing, and doing it in secret, because a woman of her rank who was known to be doing it would be finished.

One is performing on a London stage under a false identity. One is writing novels nobody knows she writes. One is producing some of the best forged antiquities in the London market. These are not hobbies given to a heroine so she reads as spirited. They are the plot: the secret is what she stands to lose, and the romance keeps running straight at it.

Ramsey is an independently published author who came out of the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart competition (a finalist with the first book and a winner with the second) and the books read like it. They are tighter and more deliberately constructed than the covers suggest.

Reading order: the four connect through a circle of friends, and the same families recur, so publication order is the right order. The Staunton siblings in particular turn up across more than one book.

The books

The four on this shelf

Book one · the actressHeiress Without a CauseMadeleine has found on a London stage, in disguise, the admiration the ton never gave her. When she is nearly recognized she does something reckless to protect the secret: she sets her actress persona up as the mistress of a duke in disgraced exile, recently dragged home by his father’s death. Golden Heart finalist, and the book that establishes the series pattern.
Book two · the novelistScotsmen Prefer BlondesLady Amelia Staunton sets out to rescue a friend from a marriage of convenience and manages to trap herself in the compromise instead, which leaves her marrying the Scottish earl herself. Won the Golden Heart. Reiving, a moonlit library, and a heroine whose secret writing life is the thing the marriage has to survive.
Book three · the widowThe Marquess Who Loved MeThe darkest of the four. Ellie chose her father’s approval over the man she loved, married his cousin, and was widowed almost immediately. A decade later Nick comes back from India carrying a murder to solve and a grudge he has not managed to put down. Revenge and reunion are the same plot here, and the book lets that be genuinely uncomfortable for a while.
Book four · the forgerThe Earl Who Played With FirePrudence Etchingham is impeccably proper and responsible for a good number of the best forgeries circulating in the London antiquities trade. Alex Staunton, Earl of Salford, wants her and believes an old family curse means he cannot have her. When someone from his past takes an interest in Prudence, the curse stops being an excuse and starts being a problem. The most inventive premise in the run.

Shelf correction

One title was filed under the wrong series

Lord of Deceit is not a Muses of Mayfair book. It was recorded that way on this shelf and that was wrong. It belongs to Sara Ramsey’s other series, Heiress Games, where it is the second book, three Briarley cousins forced by a clause in their grandfather’s will to compete for the family estate by out-marrying each other before a house party ends. Same author, different world, no connection to the Mayfair circle.

It has been left on the shelf, correctly labeled, rather than removed. The owner still owns it.

Coverage

Where this sits on the shelf

Four books by one author, read as a set, with an actual organising idea holding them together, which puts this above most of the indie runs on this shelf. It is the clearest case here of a series worth writing up book by book rather than as one hub.

No covers on this page. Every cover source available here failed for this series: Open Library has no usable image for two of the four, the Google Books service is over quota from this address, and the Barnes & Noble image host refuses direct requests. Rather than show one cover and three gray tiles, the books are listed as text.
Nothing here has been read directly. The premises come from the publisher listings and the author’s own descriptions, cross-checked against series bibliographies. The reading of what the series is about, the inverted muse, is drawn from the pattern across those four premises and is offered as a reading, not as something the author has stated.
