I.O.I
I.O.I began as eleven winners of the first Produce 101, worked under a contract designed to end, disbanded in 2017, and returned nine years later to prove that a deadline is not the same thing as erasure.

The RaeRae take
The industry learned that viewers would emotionally invest in a lineup even when the contract arrived with an expiration date. Agencies learned they could pull members into competing schedules before the group finished. Fans learned that “temporary” does not make grief efficient. Then the women came back a decade later and turned the warning label into a reunion album.
All eleven members
The group is still eleven. The 2026 LOOP promotion featured nine because KANG MINA and ZHOU JIEQIONG had prior commitments. They were absent from this schedule, not removed from I.O.I. Every profile on this site will preserve that distinction.
The 2026 reunion: I.O.I : LOOP
It was never over
The reunion campaign used that sentence because it understood the fandom’s argument. CHUNGHA contacted members to test whether a tenth-anniversary return was possible. Nine schedules aligned; Swing Entertainment coordinated the project; a new official Instagram appeared; and a reunion that had failed to materialize before became an actual album and tour.
Nine active, eleven acknowledged
The new title track uses nine voices. The album also includes “Goodbye With A Smile,” an archive recording from 2016 that carries all eleven. That is not a loophole. It is a smart way to let the complete group remain audible inside a reunion constrained by current careers.
Current song
Suddenly: I.O.I left, lived nine years, and came back
The full deep dive covers SOMI’s writing credit, the nine-versus-eleven distinction, adult vocal colors, home-video imagery, the “We meet. We leave. We meet again” ending, the archive track, chart takeover and why nostalgia is allowed to be part of the music.
Song and MV reviews
Suddenly
Warm synth-pop, nine returning members, eleven-member history, a lyric co-written by JEON SOMI, and a reunion that stopped behaving like a polite anniversary gift.
More I.O.I reviews are coming
Official MVs will be worked newest-to-oldest: LOOP material first, then the 2016–2017 catalog. Alternate official versions will join one deep review instead of multiplying into filler.
History: one year that lasted ten
Mnet’s first Produce 101 gathered 101 trainees from different agencies. The public voted eleven into I.O.I: JEON SOMI, KIM SE JEONG, CHOI YOOJUNG, KIM CHUNGHA, KIM SO HYE, ZHOU JIEQIONG, JUNG CHAEYEON, KIM DOYEON, KANG MINA, LIM NAYOUNG and YOO YEON JUNG.
I.O.I debuted with Chrysalis and “Dream Girls.” Because the contract was non-exclusive, agencies could return members to other groups. The seven-member unit promoted “Whatta Man” without the members active elsewhere, turning lineup availability into an issue almost immediately.
The full eleven-member lineup returned for Miss Me?. “Very Very Very,” produced by J.Y. Park, became the bright, addictive song most casual listeners still use as the group’s shorthand. It also gave I.O.I its first music-show win as a complete group.
“Downpour,” written and co-produced by SEVENTEEN’s WOOZI, became the final single before the contract ended. The farewell concert made the administrative deadline emotionally real. Members returned to separate agencies and careers.
A 2019 return was announced and postponed before collapsing. A fifth-anniversary livestream in 2021 brought members together on screen. Every attempt proved demand still existed while also showing how hard multi-agency coordination had become.
Nine members returned for the third mini album, concerts and promotions. KANG MINA and ZHOU JIEQIONG sat out because of previous commitments. “Suddenly” became a chart success, won music shows and changed the reunion story from nostalgia-only to current public demand.

U&I
The official fandom name plays on “you and I” and visually echoes I.O.I. It is sentimental in exactly the way a temporary group’s fandom name would be: connection written directly into the typography.
The national girl group label
I.O.I was widely called the “Nation’s Girl Group” during its original run. The label reflected Produce 101’s public-vote premise as much as raw chart status: viewers had literally assembled the lineup.
The essential argument
Participation is not membership. The 2016 unit had seven active performers; the group was still eleven. The 2026 reunion had nine active performers; the group was still eleven. Schedules change. The original vote result does not.
Why the reunion mattered
I.O.I became the first Produce group to return with a substantial anniversary album and promotions after disbandment. That gives every later project-group fandom a dangerous new source of hope.
The tea, with receipts
Who actually started it?
Fan discussion and member accounts credit CHUNGHA with calling the women individually to gauge interest. A reunion press release can say “after careful discussion”; a phone tree is the more human answer.
The missing-member rumor problem
KANG MINA and ZHOU JIEQIONG were immediately mislabeled “former members” on some pages. No official departure announcement exists. Both missed the 2026 activities because of prior commitments.
It charted harder than expected
“Suddenly” was positioned as anniversary music and then won multiple music shows, topped major charts and reportedly held No. 1 on Melon’s daily chart for thirty days. The public did not treat it like a museum piece.
Does this mean permanent I.O.I?
No permanent activity plan was announced. The members concluded the reunion promotions and returned to separate careers. The door is proven, not permanently propped open.
