Evangelion Episode 21: He Was Aware That He Was Still a Child

Episode 21 stops the forward motion and opens the floor beneath the entire series. SEELE abducts Fuyutsuki, forcing him to account for NERV’s past. His memories connect Yui Ikari, Gendo Rokubungi, Naoko Akagi, Second Impact, Gehirn, Rei, and the creation of the organization now commanding the pilots. The history does not reveal one villain inventing everything alone. The disaster grows through collaboration, silence, longing, and people deciding that the end goal excuses another hidden truth.

Yui’s contact experiment becomes the emotional center. She enters Unit-01 knowing more than the people around her and does not return. Gendo turns that loss into a project large enough to reorganize humanity. Fuyutsuki stays. Naoko builds the MAGI and gives her labor, love, and identity to a man who uses all three. Their choices create the machinery that later consumes Shinji, Rei, and Asuka.

Kaji’s investigation brings the past into the present. He frees Fuyutsuki, sends Misato the information he gathered, and accepts that his double life has reached its end. His death is not staged as a heroic explosion. A familiar voice, a shadowed meeting, and a gunshot close the file. Misato receives his final message after the choice can no longer be changed.

THE WITNESS

Fuyutsuki knew Gendo was dangerous and joined him anyway

Before NERV, Kozo Fuyutsuki was a professor who met Yui as a gifted student and Gendo as a man surrounded by trouble. He distrusted Gendo’s motives and recognized the way ambition followed him. That early suspicion matters because Fuyutsuki cannot claim ignorance later. He saw the warning signs before the uniforms, underground city, and giant weapons made resistance harder.

After Second Impact, Fuyutsuki investigated the official story and found the human experiment hidden underneath. He confronted Gendo with evidence. Gendo answered by showing him the larger project. The reveal transformed outrage into recruitment. Fuyutsuki decided that access, Yui’s involvement, and the possibility of shaping events from inside justified cooperation.

That decision makes him one of Evangelion’s most believable compromised adults. He is not seduced by simple money or power. He believes the project carries knowledge and consequences too important to abandon. Staying close feels responsible. Years later, staying close has made him indispensable to the system he once intended to question.

Institutions often neutralize critics by giving them a seat at the table. The critic gains information and influence while the institution gains legitimacy. Every compromise can be defended as necessary for the next chance to intervene. Fuyutsuki’s presence beside Gendo shows how long a person can wait for a better moment while helping the machinery run.

YUI IKARI

Yui is more than Gendo’s lost wife, but the episode still keeps her plan behind glass

Yui appears warm, intelligent, and unusually calm about forces that frighten everyone else. She chooses Gendo despite Fuyutsuki’s doubts. She participates in the Eva project with an understanding of SEELE’s ambitions. Her contact experiment is not presented as a random workplace accident. She appears to know that entering Unit-01 may create a permanent result.

That agency changes the family tragedy. Gendo did not simply lose a passive victim. He lost a partner who may have pursued her own version of humanity’s future. Unit-01 becomes Yui’s monument, body, refuge, and message. Shinji later enters a machine containing a decision his mother made before he could consent to living inside the consequences.

The episode refuses to disclose enough of Yui’s intent to judge her fully. That mystery gives her mythic power and creates a moral problem. If she planned to remain inside Unit-01, she left Shinji with Gendo and helped build conditions that would pull their son into the Eva. Love and foresight do not erase abandonment.

Fuyutsuki remembers Yui with tenderness that may soften his judgment. Gendo reorganizes the world around retrieving or rejoining her. Both men center her as the reason for their loyalty, yet Yui’s own voice remains limited. The woman with the largest effect on the plot is preserved through men who need her to mean something specific.

GENDO ROKUBUNGI BECOMES GENDO IKARI

He takes Yui’s name and later uses their child as a route back to her

Young Gendo is abrasive, strategic, and willing to use relationships as access. Marrying Yui brings him into the Ikari family and closer to SEELE’s project. The marriage can contain real love and ambition at the same time. Evangelion’s adults rarely have motives polite enough to separate.

Yui’s disappearance intensifies every controlling instinct he already possessed. Gendo does not grieve by withdrawing. He creates schedules, clones, Dummy systems, and a private version of Instrumentality. Power becomes the language he uses to avoid helplessness.

Shinji is the child who proves Gendo once belonged to a family. That makes the boy emotionally dangerous. Instead of facing grief and parenting through the discomfort, Gendo sends Shinji away and later summons him as a pilot. He manages the relationship like every other unstable component: distance until operational need requires contact.

The episode title points toward the child still inside the adult. Gendo’s behavior is sophisticated in scale and immature in emotional structure. He wants reunion without vulnerability, control without negotiation, and love without the possibility of rejection. The world pays for his refusal to grow around loss.

NAOKO AKAGI

NERV’s first great computer system contains a woman the organization treated as replaceable

Naoko Akagi builds the MAGI from three aspects of herself: scientist, mother, and woman. That design admits what NERV’s culture pretends to avoid. Science is not produced by a person without desire or history. The system inherits competing judgments because Naoko understood herself as multiple and contradictory.

Her relationship with Gendo gives him access to another brilliant woman whose labor supports his scenario. He offers enough intimacy to keep the bond alive while withholding the truth about Rei. Naoko believes she occupies a unique place. Gendo treats closeness as another controlled resource.

When the first Rei repeats cruel words learned from Gendo, Naoko recognizes the child’s resemblance to Yui and the humiliation hidden in her own relationship. She strangles Rei and then dies by suicide. The scene is horrifying because the adult directs rage toward a child who has been created, coached, and used by Gendo.

Naoko is responsible for killing Rei. Gendo is responsible for the system of manipulation surrounding them. The distinction matters. Patriarchal harm does not turn women into innocent symbols when they harm other women or children. The structure distributes pain downward, and Naoko chooses the most vulnerable target in the room.

Ritsuko inherits MAGI, NERV, and the same relationship pattern. She knows more than her mother and still becomes entangled with Gendo. Knowledge cannot protect a person when the institution rewards repetition and isolates alternatives.

REI I

The first Rei dies as a child and returns as evidence that NERV can replace a person while denying the death

Rei’s presence in the past confirms that the girl Shinji knows is part of an ongoing project. She resembles Yui because her body comes from material tied to Yui. Her identity is shaped by cloning, souls, memory gaps, and Gendo’s control. The adults around her respond to resemblance before recognizing personhood.

Rei I speaks with the cruelty of a child repeating adult language. She does not understand the full danger of calling Naoko old and unnecessary. Gendo’s contempt travels through a child’s mouth and triggers murder. He remains absent from the immediate violence while his words organize the room.

The replacement of Rei hides the crime and teaches NERV that identity can be administratively continued. A new body receives the same name. The institution avoids mourning because mourning would require acknowledging that a child was killed inside the project. This logic later supports Dummy Plug technology and Instrumentality. If bodies and boundaries are interchangeable, consent becomes easy to ignore.

GEHIRN BECOMES NERV

A new name does not clean the blood beneath headquarters

After Naoko’s death and the completion of MAGI, Gehirn is dissolved and NERV emerges. The transition looks bureaucratic, which is exactly why the history matters. Organizations can rename themselves, change logos, and restructure authority without changing the people, assets, or concealed harm at the foundation.

NERV presents itself as humanity’s defense against Angels. That mission is real. Tokyo-3 would be destroyed without the Evas. The public purpose also shields the private scenario pursued by Gendo and SEELE. Emergency authority makes questioning look reckless because every delay can be framed as a threat to survival.

Fuyutsuki stays through the reorganization. Ritsuko takes her mother’s place. Gendo keeps command. The continuity of personnel proves that the transformation is not a moral reset. NERV inherits the sins of Gehirn and scales them up.

KAJI’S LAST INVESTIGATION

Kaji frees Fuyutsuki because truth matters even when truth cannot save him

Kaji has worked for NERV, the Japanese government, and SEELE while investigating all of them. His charm often makes the danger look lighter than the danger is. Episode 21 removes that cushion. Freeing Fuyutsuki exposes his final allegiance: not to one organization, but to the possibility that somebody outside the inner circle might learn what is happening.

He understands the likely cost. The final meeting is staged without revealing the shooter, keeping attention on the system rather than one mystery culprit. Many factions have reason to silence him. The important fact is that Kaji’s work has made death administratively useful.

His last answering-machine message to Misato mixes ordinary warmth with finality. He does not give her a dramatic goodbye in person because secrecy has shaped their relationship from the beginning. Misato hears him after he is gone, repeating the series pattern of truth arriving when truth can no longer change the immediate outcome.

Misato’s grief is private and bodily. Shinji hears her crying and does not know how to comfort her. The child who has begged adults for connection now stands outside an adult’s closed door. Pain does not automatically teach people how to reach each other.

WHAT THE EPISODE GETS RIGHT

Backstory becomes accountability when the past explains a system without excusing the people who built the system

Episode 21 does not use history to soften Gendo into a misunderstood father. Losing Yui explains his obsession. The explanation makes his later choices more coherent and more frightening. Grief can motivate abuse without absolving abuse.

Fuyutsuki and Naoko receive the same treatment. Their intelligence and emotional wounds matter. They still make choices that keep the project alive or harm vulnerable people. Evangelion lets structural pressure and personal responsibility coexist.

The episode also understands that institutions are made from relationships. MAGI contains Naoko’s divided self. Unit-01 contains Yui. NERV contains Gendo’s grief and SEELE’s ideology. Technology does not sit outside human emotion. Technology can fossilize emotion into infrastructure.

WHAT COULD BE BETTER

The women who created the future remain filtered through men who narrate the past

Fuyutsuki’s perspective organizes the history, which gives the episode a clear witness and limits Yui’s independence. Her intentions remain suggestive rather than explicit. Mystery is part of the design, but the balance lets Gendo and Fuyutsuki define her importance.

Naoko’s collapse also moves quickly from professional brilliance to romantic humiliation, murder, and death. The sequence is powerful and risks reducing her to a warning about jealousy. More attention to workplace isolation and Gendo’s manipulation would deepen the social structure around the tragedy.

Kaji’s death retains ambiguity at the cost of emotional specificity. The choice fits his secret life, though Misato’s later grief carries more weight than his final perspective. The episode closes files while deliberately leaving the people inside partially unreadable.
