The premise

An agency built out of being cut off

Dominick Manton is a viscount’s younger son who has been disinherited, and not for anything he did. Rather than accept the slow drift into genteel uselessness that normally follows, he opens an investigation agency specialising in finding people who have gone missing. He hires his illegitimate half-sister, Lisette Bonnaud, to work cases with him, which in this period is two social transgressions stacked on each other, because she is illegitimate and she is employed.

That setup is what makes the run more interesting than its covers suggest. Every book here is about somebody written out of a family record trying to get back into it, or trying to prove the record was wrong in the first place. The cases are literal missing-person cases. The romances are the same shape. Jeffries never points at the parallel, but it holds across all four.

Read in order. The Bonnaud siblings recur, and the agency’s own back story (the scandal that cost Dom his inheritance, and the half-brother behind it) unwinds across the run. Book four pays off a thread opened in book one.

The books

All four, in order

Book one · 2013What the Duke DesiresMaximilian Cale, Duke of Lyons, gave up years ago on the elder brother who was taken as a child and never found. Then a note arrives claiming the brother is alive. Chasing it brings Max to Lisette Bonnaud, whose own brother has now vanished, and the two of them travel to Paris passing as a married couple to look for him. A fake-marriage plot bolted onto a real missing-heir mystery.
Book two · 2013When the Rogue ReturnsVictor Cale’s young wife had a gift for making convincing copies of fine jewelry. Her work surfaced in a major diamond theft, and she disappeared the same night. Ten years on he is sent to Edinburgh to look into a wealthy baron’s mysterious fiancée, and it is her, living as a widow under another name. The strongest hook in the series, because the reunion is an interrogation before it is anything else.
Book three · 2014How the Scoundrel SeducesLady Zoe Keane hires the agency to find a Romany woman who may be her actual birth mother, an answer that would unmake her whole position. Tristan Bonnaud takes the case, because he has the language and the connections his colleagues lack, but he has a private reason for going: an old scandal involving the half-brother who ruined Dom. Two investigations sharing one road.
Book four · 2015If the Viscount FallsDom’s own book, and the one the series was built toward. A woman married into the family disappears after stopping at an inn in York, having told a stablehand she was meeting a friend. The case reaches the agency through Jane Vernon, who was engaged to Dom years ago until he staged a betrayal to make her leave him. She finds out what he did. The investigation and the reckoning run on the same track.

The recurring cast

Who actually runs the agency

The founderDominick MantonDisinherited younger son, heir presumptive to a title he does not expect to see. Built the agency instead of accepting the drift. Gets his own book last, which is the right call.
The half-sisterLisette BonnaudIllegitimate daughter of a viscount. Works the cases herself and declines the position the era assigned her. Heroine of book one, present throughout.
The brotherTristan BonnaudLisette’s brother, and the agency’s man for anything needing charm, nerve, or a language nobody else has. Hero of book three.
The problemGeorge MantonDom’s half-brother, holder of the title, and the reason Dom has none. A long-running antagonist rather than a per-book villain.

Coverage

Where this sits on the shelf

This is one of the few complete runs on the shelf, all four books, no gaps. That matters more than length does, because a series read end to end is one you can actually say something about. A scattered three-of-nine is not.

Nothing here has been read directly for this page. The premises, the recurring cast and the series structure come from the author’s own site and the publisher’s series listing, cross-checked against standard bibliographies. Where a book’s ending is not described, that is because it was not available, not because it is being held back.
