RaeRae Reviews: ONE PIECE in LOVE Episode 4

Bottom line

One Piece in Love Side Story is not a numbered One Piece television episode. This official vertical spin-off takes high-school crushes, club politics, and the dangerous confidence of a fan who knows too much trivia, then lets those ingredients crash into one another at phone-screen speed.

Not every joke needs a club dispute or escaped animal. This episode tests whether the cast can survive on pure timing. The answer is yes, mostly because Nakatsugawa can make breakfast feel like a canon argument and Koyama can puncture the performance with one look.

Release facts

The official One Piece team released this chapter on April 4, 2025 through its YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram channels. Toei Animation produced the adaptation from Daiki Ihara\’s comedy manga. The distribution format matters because these shorts were made to be watched vertically, one concentrated burst at a time.

Episode 4 changes rhythm and presents a collection of tiny side stories. The segments bounce through a mosquito, a morning encounter, a next-time gag, a breakfast buffet, and a photo-app bit. The anthology structure turns ordinary seconds into quick fandom collisions.

The premise earns the One Piece name

Plenty of parody projects paste famous names onto unrelated jokes. ONE PIECE in LOVE does something sharper. The characters use One Piece as language, social currency, escape route, and occasional weapon. A reference can build a friendship, wreck a conversation, or give Nakatsugawa permission he definitely does not possess.

The series also understands the embarrassment inside sincere fandom. Loving a story does not automatically make somebody good at sharing that love. The funniest moments arrive when knowledge is correct and judgment is missing.

The character work

The fragments give Koyama more room to control the temperature. She does not have to wait for the boys to finish a premise. Her reactions can end a bit, redirect a bit, or reveal that she has understood the reference and still refuses to reward the delivery.

Nobody has to imitate the Straw Hats perfectly. The borrowed names create expectations, then the students reveal their own limits. That gap protects the spin-off from becoming cosplay with dialogue.

Romance without the polished fantasy

Yamamoto\’s feelings for Koyama are awkward because teenage feelings are awkward. He cannot control the setting, find the perfect sentence, or stop Nakatsugawa from turning private emotion into public programming. The comedy refuses to reward him merely for having a crush.

Koyama receives the right to judge what happens around her. She is not a Nami-shaped finish line. Her patience has edges, her curiosity has limits, and her ability to read the room usually beats the boys\’ ability to manage the room.

Nakatsugawa is the fandom problem

Nakatsugawa is exhausting, useful, loyal, invasive, inventive, and far too pleased with himself. Flattening him into a harmless nerd would weaken the joke. His enthusiasm creates community while his entitlement creates the mess that community has to clean up.

I know this fan. Every fandom knows this fan. He can quote the chapter but miss the person standing directly in front of him. The adaptation laughs at that failure without pretending enthusiasm itself is shameful.

How the vertical animation works

Anthology pacing suits vertical video. Each sketch arrives, establishes one visual idea, and leaves before the joke starts begging for applause. The short format becomes part of the writing instead of a technical limitation that the animators apologize for.

The layout favors faces and readable silhouettes. That choice keeps the comedy legible on a phone and lets reaction timing carry scenes that a longer production might bury under movement. Short does not mean unfinished. Short means every beat needs a job.

What worked

The cast chemistry works because affection and irritation can occupy the same scene. Yamamoto wants connection. Koyama wants basic honesty. Nakatsugawa wants the universe to recognize that One Piece already explained everything. Those desires can cooperate for five seconds before colliding again.

The adaptation also respects the manga\’s specific joke density. References reward fans, but the social disaster remains readable even if somebody misses a chapter number. That balance keeps the project from becoming a quiz wearing an anime costume.

What could have gone further

The compressed runtime sometimes exits just when a character conflict becomes interesting. Koyama in particular could use more space away from the boys\’ competing agendas. Her reactions are precise enough to suggest a fuller inner comedy that the short cannot always follow.

I also wanted a little more quiet after the biggest gag. A pause can expose whether the characters learned anything or simply survived Nakatsugawa again. The pace delivers punch lines efficiently, but emotional residue deserves a few extra seconds.

Why this belongs in Reviews

This production has its own title, release, format, and adaptation identity. Treating the chapter as a React from the main television run would be inaccurate. Numbered One Piece television episodes belong in Reacts. A separate ONA short belongs in Reviews beside the franchise\’s other OVAs, specials, and side productions.

That separation also makes the hub usable. Fans looking for Egghead should not have to step around school-club shorts, and fans looking for this spin-off should not have to search through more than a thousand weekly episodes.

RaeRae\’s verdict

Episode 4 feels like the cast passing notes between larger chapters. Some pieces hit harder than others, but the variety earns its place. The side story also proves this adaptation can be loose without becoming disposable.

ONE PIECE in LOVE knows that fandom can be loving and ridiculous in the same breath. The short keeps both truths. That honesty gives the comedy more bite than a tidy celebration ever could.
