Naglimund under a black winter storm as withdrawn siege engines, internal breaches, and a red-hot gate reveal the attack sequence

Story 101 · Book 1 · Chapter 43

How Naglimund Falls: The Harrowing

Naglimund does not suddenly fall. The attack works because every stage answers a defense, assumption, or unanswered warning the book established earlier.

Phase one

The human siege teaches the defenders to read the wrong ending

Elias’s first assault is costly, visible, and mechanically legible: towers, ladders, engines, fire, walls, and bodies. Naglimund survives the day through preparation and improvisation. When the human camp withdraws, relief feels earned because the defenders have just solved the problem they could see.

The withdrawal is not surrender. It clears the field for allies who do not need the same roads, engines, daylight, or moral disguise. The apparent ending is the first stage of the trap.

Phase two

Weather, parley, and internal breach break different layers at once

The fast northern storm turns midday black and changes visibility, temperature, sound, and expectation. White Foxes and Hunën appear at scale. Red Hand riders present the attack as ancient revenge, forcing the defenders to confront a history larger than Elias’s succession war.

Meanwhile Bukken are already inside the gardens. The fortress’s celebrated defenses are oriented toward enemies crossing open ground; the internal eruption makes the architecture’s confidence irrelevant. The assault is simultaneous military pressure, supernatural theater, historical claim, and infiltration.

Phase three

The gate fails, the archive moves, and refuge becomes testimony

The Red Hand abandons ordinary physical form and melts the gate’s iron fastenings. Norns enter with fire-tubes while Hunën convert breaches into overwhelming force. Bishop Anodis dies still interpreting Elias as rightful. Jarnauga and Strangyeard remain with the Minneyar evidence because one sword is still missing and the archive cannot simply be abandoned.

Strangyeard’s prepared route prevents the fall from erasing every witness. Jarnauga calls him friend at the last and holds the door. Above the burning fortress, Josua’s crown claim is born among refugees rather than courtiers. Naglimund is lost, but the story of how it was lost escapes.
