Formation! The Sasuke Retrieval Squad!
Shikamaru receives his first command, builds a pursuit team around real capabilities, and carries Naruto’s impossible promise toward Orochimaru’s death-state ritual.
RaeRae Reacts
Episode 110 discovers Sasuke is gone and hands the emergency to the newest chunin in the village.
Izumo and Kotetsu find Sakura unconscious on the bench. Tsunade learns about the defection, but higher-ranked ninja are unavailable.
So Shikamaru gets his first command.
He recruits Naruto, Choji, Kiba, Akamaru and Neji. Lee stays behind because surgery recovery is not optional just because his friend is in danger.
Shikamaru builds a pursuit formation around what each person can actually do.
Sakura asks Naruto to bring Sasuke back.
Naruto promises.
Outside Konoha, the Sound Four tells Sasuke the next step toward Orochimaru requires him to “die just this once.”
The village sends children to retrieve a child from adults preparing to put him through a death-state ritual.
Everything is fine. Leadership looks thrilled.
Sakura Wakes After the Departure
Sakura wakes on the bench after Sasuke knocks her unconscious.
Izumo and Kotetsu find her and learn what happened.
This is the first institutional confirmation that Sasuke did not merely wander off or miss curfew. He left the village with enemy shinobi connected to Orochimaru.
Sakura carries the last direct contact and the guilt of failing to stop him. Neither burden belongs solely to her. She confronted Sasuke without backup because she recognized the danger before anyone else reached the gate.
Once Izumo and Kotetsu report the defection, the problem becomes Konoha's responsibility.
That transition matters. Sasuke's departure is personal to Team 7, but retrieval cannot depend only on friends chasing emotion through the forest.
It requires command, tracking and rules for survival.
Tsunade Has No Senior Team Available
Tsunade cannot send the ideal response.
Higher-ranked ninja are unavailable, leaving a time-sensitive retrieval mission to genin under one newly promoted chunin.
This is the shinobi system at its least comfortable. Konoha calls these children military assets, then acts surprised when an emergency requires using them like military assets.
Waiting for senior personnel gives the Sound Four more distance and allows Orochimaru's procedure to begin. Sending the available squad exposes young ninja to enemies already strong enough to overpower Sasuke.
Tsunade chooses pursuit because delay carries the greater strategic risk.
The decision may be necessary.
Necessary does not mean acceptable conditions magically appeared.
The village's shortage becomes a weight Shikamaru and his team must carry into hostile territory.
Shikamaru Receives His First Command Immediately
Tsunade summons Shikamaru and assigns him leadership.
His promotion recognized tactical judgment. The village now asks that judgment to function under real stakes before he has time to get comfortable with the vest.
Sasuke is a comrade, a deserter and a target Orochimaru may be preparing as a vessel. The mission requires speed without reckless pursuit.
Shikamaru must recruit from whoever is available, assess abilities and build a formation capable of surviving contact with the Sound Four.
He cannot treat the assignment as a puzzle detached from people. Every decision affects friends who trust him to know when to advance, separate or retreat.
The exam evaluated his ability to choose under pressure.
Episode 110 removes the safety of evaluation.
There is no proctor waiting to stop the match.
Naruto Is the First Essential Recruit
Shikamaru recruits Naruto at Tsunade's recommendation.
Naruto has direct knowledge of Sasuke, stamina for pursuit, shadow clones for reconnaissance and the absolute refusal to leave the mission unfinished.
That last quality is both asset and risk.
Naruto will continue when others cannot. He may also reject a necessary retreat because returning without Sasuke feels like betraying the bond.
Shikamaru needs Naruto's commitment inside command rather than operating beside it.
Tsunade's recommendation recognizes that Sasuke is not ordinary cargo. Reaching him may require the person whose rivalry can still force an emotional response.
Naruto's value is not only Rasengan.
He is the squad member most likely to make Sasuke answer as Sasuke, not merely as Orochimaru's recruit.
Choji Is Not a Courtesy Addition
Shikamaru recruits Choji because he understands Choji's capabilities better than anyone.
Outsiders often reduce Choji to appetite, size and the easiest joke in the room. Shikamaru knows the discipline, power and loyalty behind that presentation.
The choice demonstrates leadership through specific trust.
Shikamaru does not assemble the people who look most impressive on paper. He selects a teammate whose strength he can deploy accurately and whose reactions he can predict under pressure.
That personal knowledge will matter when the formation begins separating into individual fights.
Choji enters because he belongs in the mission.
He also enters because Shikamaru believes in him before the battlefield forces everybody else to notice why.
Kiba and Akamaru Give the Squad Its Trail
Kiba and Akamaru bring tracking ability the pursuit cannot function without.
The Sound Four has a lead and every reason to hide its route. Raw speed means nothing if the squad runs quickly in the wrong direction.
Kiba can read scent, movement and changes in the environment. Akamaru extends that awareness and gives the team a partnership already practiced under combat stress.
Their role shows why formation matters more than collecting the strongest available attacks.
Naruto can create a hundred clones.
None of them helps if nobody can identify where Sasuke went.
Shikamaru builds the team around dependencies. Tracking finds the enemy. tactical order keeps pursuit efficient. Combat ability protects the trackers long enough for the mission to continue.
Lee Stays Behind
Shikamaru invites Lee, but Lee declines because he is recovering from surgery.
This is growth.
Lee's instinct is to answer friendship through action regardless of bodily cost. Staying behind recognizes that recovery is part of the path, not cowardice or wasted time.
The choice also respects Tsunade's work. She took a dangerous risk to restore his future. Ignoring medical limits immediately would turn that chance into another performance of self-destruction.
Lee wants to help.
He is not currently fit for this mission.
Both facts can exist without shame.
The village has already sent too many injured children back into danger because urgency made caution inconvenient.
Lee refusing that cycle is one of the healthiest decisions in the episode.
Shikamaru Builds the Formation
Shikamaru arranges the squad according to each member's abilities.
Formation is not decorative marching order. It determines who detects threats first, who relays information, who can respond from different positions and how the team protects its most mission-critical functions.
Shikamaru turns five genin and one dog into a system.
That is why Tsunade promoted him.
He does not need to outfight every member personally. He needs to understand what each person contributes and keep those contributions available under pressure.
The structure also gives Naruto boundaries. Commitment has a position. Tracking has a position. defense and analysis have positions.
The team moves faster because nobody has to invent a role after contact begins.
Sakura Gives Naruto the Promise
Sakura reaches the squad before departure and asks Naruto to bring Sasuke back.
Naruto promises he will.
The vow is emotionally necessary and tactically impossible to guarantee.
Naruto cannot control Sasuke's choice, the Sound Four's strength or whether every squad member survives. He can promise effort, not outcome.
He promises the outcome anyway because Sakura is asking from the place where her own plea failed.
Naruto accepts the burden because he loves her, loves Sasuke and needs to believe bonds can still create return.
Shikamaru launches a mission with objectives and formation.
Naruto launches a private vow inside it.
Those commitments will cooperate until command and promise demand different things.
Sasuke Must “Die Just This Once”
Beyond Konoha's border, the Sound Four tells Sasuke that Orochimaru's procedure requires him to die once.
The phrase exposes the destination behind the invitation.
Sasuke chose power, but he does not control the method. Orochimaru's system requires surrendering his body to a process managed by people who already defeated him.
Calling the death temporary does not make the consent informed or the risk small.
The Sound Four frames the procedure as a step toward strength. The language converts bodily annihilation into training inconvenience.
Sasuke left Konoha to gain control over his future.
His first task is to submit to others controlling whether his body returns from death.
That contradiction is the truth of Orochimaru's offer.
What Changes After Episode 110
Izumo and Kotetsu find Sakura and report Sasuke's defection.
Tsunade gives Shikamaru his first command because senior ninja are unavailable.
Shikamaru recruits Naruto, Choji, Kiba, Akamaru and Neji.
Lee stays behind to recover from surgery.
Shikamaru assigns an optimized pursuit formation.
Sakura asks Naruto to bring Sasuke back, and Naruto promises.
The retrieval squad leaves Konoha.
The Sound Four tells Sasuke that Orochimaru's procedure requires him to die once.
The pursuit has begun.
Sakura wakes with proof that the crisis was real
Sasuke is gone, and Sakura has to report a departure she tried to stop alone. The village can no longer treat his distress as rivalry, mood, or a problem one teacher already addressed. Orochimaru’s recruitment operation has succeeded.
Sakura carries the facts and the emotional aftermath. Adults now have a duty to turn her testimony into action without making her responsible for planning the rescue.
Tsunade inherits an emergency shaped by earlier neglect
The new Hokage did not create Sasuke’s massacre trauma, the curse mark, Itachi’s return, or Orochimaru’s interest. She inherits every consequence at once. Leadership begins with problems that arrived before the title.
She must act quickly while also confronting why a targeted child could leave through the village boundary with four hostile operatives. Retrieval cannot replace a safeguarding review.
Konoha’s senior forces are absent when the village needs them
Many experienced shinobi are deployed because Konoha remains depleted after the invasion. Tsunade has limited personnel and a pursuit window closing by the minute. The scarcity is real.
It still means children will chase a team serving one of the sannin. Resource shortage explains the decision; it does not make the risk acceptable or transform genin into adults.
Shikamaru receives command immediately after promotion
His first assignment as a chūnin is not supervised practice. He must assemble a squad, evaluate abilities, choose formation, and pursue Sasuke through potentially hostile territory. The promotion becomes responsibility before celebration has cooled.
Konoha selected him for judgment, and then gives that judgment almost no margin for error. Institutional confidence becomes institutional dependence very quickly.
Leadership begins with knowing the limits of the roster
Shikamaru cannot recruit the strongest possible team because the strongest shinobi are unavailable. He must build from people he can reach and skills suited to pursuit.
Good command does not pretend scarcity has disappeared. It makes the limitations visible, assigns roles deliberately, and avoids asking one person to perform every function.
Naruto is essential because the mission is personal and that creates risk
Naruto will not abandon Sasuke. His stamina, shadow clones, Rasengan, and refusal to quit make him valuable. His emotional investment can also override formation, timing, and withdrawal decisions.
Shikamaru needs Naruto’s commitment without allowing commitment to become unilateral command. Friendship fuels the pursuit, but leadership must direct it.
Choji is selected for capability, not kindness
Choji brings physical power, knowledge of Shikamaru’s thinking, and a willingness to stand between danger and his friends. People who judge him by appetite or appearance miss why Shikamaru trusts him.
The selection matters because Shikamaru does not treat friendship as charity. He recognizes a teammate whose strength becomes decisive when the formation needs someone to hold a position others cannot.
Neji brings vision and a history of changing his mind
Byakugan gives the squad surveillance range and precision. Neji also enters this mission after Naruto challenged his belief that destiny fixes every outcome. Pursuing Sasuke asks him to help someone choosing a destructive path before that choice becomes permanent.
His presence carries both tactical value and thematic weight. People can change direction, which is the proposition driving retrieval.
Kiba and Akamaru make the trail legible
Pursuit fails if the team cannot locate its target. Kiba’s scent tracking and Akamaru’s partnership turn scattered traces into direction. Their role prevents the mission from becoming blind speed.
Information gathering rarely receives the glory of a finishing technique, but every later battle depends on reaching the right place in time.
Lee stays behind because medical reality sets a boundary
Lee wants to help and understands the urgency. Surgery and recovery keep him from joining. The exclusion hurts because his identity centers on showing up through effort.
Respecting the boundary protects his future. A village that lets an injured child convert loyalty into fresh damage would repeat the failure that put him in the hospital.
The roster exposes who is missing
No medical specialist joins the squad. No experienced jōnin leads it. Sakura remains behind despite knowing Sasuke’s condition best. Each absence has an explanation, and together they create serious vulnerability.
A formation can distribute available strengths. It cannot conjure capacities the institution failed to provide.
Shikamaru orders the squad around function, not ego
He places tracking and vision where they can read danger, strength where it can hold pursuit together, and Naruto where his unpredictable responses can be used without letting him define the entire formation.
The arrangement treats teamwork as architecture. Each position exists because another position depends on it.
The single-file formation protects information flow
Spacing, order, and signals allow the group to move quickly while preserving awareness of attacks from front and rear. Shikamaru explains why each member stands where he does.
That explanation builds trust because command becomes legible. The squad follows a plan it understands rather than obeying rank as theater.
Sasuke is a retrieval target and still a person with agency
Konoha wants him returned because Orochimaru poses a grave threat and because leaving the village has legal consequences. Sasuke also made a decision, however manipulated and coerced its conditions.
The mission must stop immediate harm without pretending force alone can restore belonging. Bringing his body home will not answer why he left.
Calling the mission rescue and capture at once is honest
The squad intends to save a friend. It may have to fight him or the people escorting him. Those goals create moral tension instead of a clean heroic category.
Sasuke can need protection from Orochimaru while resisting the people providing it. Care sometimes requires intervention, but intervention should remain accountable to the person’s long-term freedom.
Sakura asks Naruto for the promise because institutions feel distant
She turns to the boy who understands Sasuke emotionally and has never accepted abandonment. Naruto becomes the person she believes will keep moving after official duty becomes painful.
The request is intimate and enormous. It transfers fear from Sakura to Naruto at the moment he already feels responsible for the bond.
Naruto accepts a burden he was always going to carry
He promises to bring Sasuke back because the mission matches his own need. The promise gives Sakura hope and gives Naruto a sentence he will treat as binding far beyond this pursuit.
Commitment can sustain action. It can also prevent a person from recognizing limits, changing strategy, or accepting that another person’s choice cannot be controlled through effort alone.
Sakura’s role should not end at waiting
She has direct knowledge of Sasuke’s departure, curse mark, and emotional condition. Keeping her physically safe may be justified given the available roster and immediate pursuit demands. Excluding her from planning and later decisions would waste critical expertise.
Waiting becomes harmful when the story treats concern as her only contribution. Information and recovery work are mission roles too.
The Sound Four prepares Sasuke through language of death and rebirth
They tell him he must die once to access greater curse-mark power. The phrase reframes a dangerous procedure as transformation and makes surrender to Orochimaru sound like self-creation.
Coercive groups often demand symbolic death because severing earlier identity weakens competing loyalties. Sasuke is asked to treat relationships, village, and body as material to be discarded for power.
The sealed container turns a child into transported property
Sasuke accepts the process, but the Sound Four places him inside a vessel and controls his movement, timing, and physical state. The image contradicts their promise of freedom.
He leaves Konoha seeking agency and immediately becomes cargo in Orochimaru’s operation. The cage looks different because he entered it voluntarily under engineered pressure.
Retrieval begins after the most preventable stage has already passed
Konoha is now chasing across distance, enemy terrain, and a prepared extraction route. Earlier intervention could have happened after the curse mark, Itachi’s attack, or the rooftop fight.
Emergency heroism often receives attention that prevention does not. The squad’s courage should never erase the cost of waiting until crisis became pursuit.
RaeRae’s full take
Episode 110 gives Shikamaru a promotion and immediately asks him to lead children against Orochimaru’s people. His formation is smart because he respects what every teammate can do and explains how their roles connect. The village’s staffing problem remains terrifying.
Sakura’s promise gives the mission its emotional center, but she should never have to place the entire future of Team 7 into Naruto’s hands. Naruto can carry love and determination. He cannot single-handedly repair the systems, trauma, and coercion that pushed Sasuke through the gate.
The Sound Four says Sasuke must die once to become stronger. The retrieval squad forms around the opposite belief: the person connected to them still exists and remains worth reaching before Orochimaru finishes turning separation into identity.
RaeRae checkpoint: Shikamaru builds the best formation available, but smart child leadership does not erase the adult staffing failure that made this roster necessary.
RaeRae's Verdict
“Formation! The Sasuke Retrieval Squad!” turns promotion into responsibility before Shikamaru has time to complain properly.
Konoha lacks senior personnel, so one new chunin leads Naruto, Choji, Kiba, Akamaru and Neji after enemies who already overpowered Sasuke. Shikamaru answers the shortage with structure instead of bravado.
Lee stays behind because healing counts as work.
Sakura gives Naruto a promise nobody can guarantee.
The Sound Four gives Sasuke a death-state procedure disguised as advancement.
One group builds power through roles, knowledge and trust.
The other demands bodily surrender to Orochimaru.
Both are moving fast.
