WORLDBUILDING LAB · ASCENDANT SKIES
The Nine Tribulations
A CVM Sekai ascension system built from familiar xianxia ingredients: heavenly trials, bodily limits, inner demons, karma, and the very reasonable possibility that lightning will arrive when a cultivator gets too ambitious.
Why I needed nine instead of one dramatic thunderstorm
Many cultivation stories use a heavenly tribulation as the price of a breakthrough. The visual is excellent. A cultivator sits in the middle of a mountain while Heaven throws lightning like it has been waiting all week to file a complaint.
The problem for my world was scale. If every serious advance ends with stronger lightning, power growth becomes a weather report. I wanted different kinds of failure. A character could have a body strong enough for more qi and still lose because fear controls every decision. Somebody with a brilliant Dao could carry karmic debts that follow them into the next realm. A villain might survive thunder and fail the one test that asks whether the soul has become anything besides hungry.
The Nine Tribulations turn ascension into a full audit. Body, energy, mind, soul, elemental balance, Heaven’s force, karma, conviction, and final transformation each get a chance to say no.
What the system does in the story
- Stops effortless power inflation. Training creates capacity. It does not guarantee permission to advance.
- Makes personality mechanically relevant. Obsession, cowardice, cruelty, loyalty, and grief can affect a breakthrough.
- Creates different kinds of scars. A survivor may leave with damaged meridians, altered fate, fractured memory, or a weaker Dao heart.
- Explains why immortals remain rare. Talent can pass one trial. A whole life has to survive all nine.
- Gives antagonists real choices. They can prepare honestly, steal protection, redirect consequences, or sacrifice somebody else.
The nine trials
1. Body
Can the physical vessel hold the next level of power? Weak bones, damaged organs, old poisons, and rushed refinement become immediate problems.
2. Qi
Can energy circulate without tearing the meridians apart? Capacity matters, but so do purity, control, and balance.
3. Heart Demon
The cultivator confronts fear, obsession, guilt, and desire. Brute force is useless if the enemy is the lie somebody keeps telling themselves.
4. Soul
Spiritual consciousness is tested for coherence. A powerful body with a fractured soul cannot safely move upward.
5. Five Elements
The body’s elemental relationships are forced into the open. Affinities that looked impressive in combat may become unstable when combined.
6. Heavenly Thunder
This is the spectacular one. Lightning burns away impurities, exposes weak protections, and makes the entire neighborhood reconsider living near cultivators.
7. Fate
Karmic debts and broken promises arrive with receipts. Protection cannot erase every consequence without creating a new debt.
8. Dao Heart
The cultivator’s chosen path is tested against compromise. If their stated belief and lived choices cannot coexist, the Dao heart cracks.
9. Ascension
The prior results are combined. Passing does not mean a shiny costume change. The body, soul, status, and relationship to the mortal realm may all transform.
Failure should be specific, not automatically fatal
The original draft treated failure like a switch: pass and evolve, fail and die. That is clean. It is also boring.
In CVM Sekai, the consequence depends on the trial and the severity of the failure. A damaged body can survive with permanent weakness. A qi collapse may lower cultivation or close certain meridians. A heart-demon failure can leave the cultivator alive but ruled by the exact fear they refused to face. A broken Dao heart can destroy access to one path while leaving another open.
Death remains possible, especially when somebody forces a breakthrough before the foundation is ready. It should not be the only result. Survivors carry better story material.
How this connects to the rest of Ascendant Skies
The Nine Tribulations work beside the Ascendant Power Index, but they answer different questions. The API describes what a character can do at a given level. The tribulations explain what they had to survive to reach it.
A character can also become dangerous without ascending cleanly. Stolen artifacts, forbidden manuals, demonic shortcuts, possession, and borrowed divine authority can produce power that outruns the body or soul. That gap is exactly where the Nine Tribulations become useful. Heaven may not stop the shortcut immediately. The unpaid bill remains.
