The Stereotypes and 9am are behind the production, Colin Tilley directed the video, and the members have talked about helping shape the choreography, harmonies, visual references, fashion, and world around it. That matters: this is a song about controlling your own image, made by a group whose image has been argued over since before debut.

Why the GIRLSET chapter feels different
The most important change is not the name. It is where the members sit in the creative conversation. In their July 2026 Forbes interview, the group described a gradual shift from performing decisions made around them to helping build the decisions themselves. Kendall proposed the GIRLSET logo, the members worked in the studio on writing and harmonies, and the final chorus of “CHAT” was reshaped into a four-part vocal stack. They also contributed to choreography arrangement, visual references, fashion ideas and the wider world surrounding the release.
That does not mean every choice is theirs or that a major-label system suddenly became a democracy. The members were more specific than that. They described an ongoing conversation with the companies, with both sides proposing ideas and negotiating what survives. That distinction matters because “creative control” is often used as a shiny slogan when the artist merely picked between two pre-approved outfits. GIRLSET has started naming the actual work: writing sessions, harmony construction, choreography notes, logo design, language versions and visual development.
The singles show the transition in stages. Savanna called “Commas” the bridge out of the VCHA chapter. “Little Miss” pushed more of the quartet’s personality forward. “Tweak” moved into throwback R&B memory while Camila and Savanna helped write its Spanish version. “CHAT” is the loudest statement so far because its subject and production process match: a song about people trying to define the group, altered by the members so it sounds more like the people being discussed.
The quartet is also careful about pacing. Their forthcoming album has been treated as a slow reveal instead of a rushed identity dump. The members have said they want room to explore without losing a recognizable center. An unreleased self-written song performed at a March radio event, commonly called “5 Seconds of Fame,” points toward more personal material about celebrity, relationships and how quickly public attention changes. CVM Sekai is not treating that song as an official release until the group does, but it is useful evidence of where their writing interests are moving.
The friendship is not decorative here either. All four lived through the same stalled VCHA period, but they did not experience it from the outside in exactly the same way. In interviews they describe one another as the people who understand the parts their families cannot fully share. That common history helps explain why the reset feels coordinated rather than four solo brands temporarily standing in the same frame. GIRLSET is still a label project, but it is increasingly a project with the members inside the control room.

History: two names, one very public growing-up period
A2K and VCHA
JYP Entertainment and Republic Records created the group through the 2023 competition series A2K (“America2Korea”). The original six-member VCHA lineup was Lexi, Camila, Kendall, Savanna, KG, and Kaylee. Their pre-debut EP SeVit (New Light) arrived September 22, 2023 with “Y.O.Universe,” followed by official debut single “Girls of the Year” on January 26, 2024. They also opened selected dates on TWICE’s Ready to Be tour—an enormous room to learn in before the group had even settled into itself.
The long pause and the reset
Kaylee began a health hiatus in March 2024 and later left the group and company through a mutual contract termination announced in July 2025. KG said she decided to leave in May 2024 and filed a lawsuit against JYP USA in December 2024 alleging mistreatment, abuse, and violations involving young performers. JYP disputed her claims, calling them false or exaggerated. The dispute was settled in August 2025, and KG separated from the company. Those are allegations and responses—not permission for fandom telephone to turn either side into invented fact.
The remaining four members were introduced as GIRLSET on August 7, 2025. The name is meant to signal a group setting its own path without a fixed boundary. “Commas” followed on August 29, and it sounded like a transition on purpose: less glossy introduction, more insistence that the next sentence belonged to them.

LOCKETS: the fandom file
LOCKETS is the official fandom name. The idea is access and closeness: fans are the ones trusted with the key to the members’ hearts, while the locket itself keeps something meaningful close. Kendall designed the fandom logo, which is exactly the kind of member-made detail this era needs more of. It turns “fandom branding” into something one of the girls actually touched.
The complicated part, without turning it into sport
The VCHA-to-GIRLSET history is real context, not decorative “tea.” Two original members left under very different circumstances; one departure involved a public lawsuit and disputed claims. The cleanest way to follow it is by dates, direct statements, and court reporting—not edited clips that announce a villain before the source has finished loading.
What is fair to say: the four current members returned with more visible creative involvement and a more self-aware image. “CHAT” does not erase what happened. It shows a group that understands the audience is watching the recovery as closely as the comeback.
