Early life and training

Lia spent part of her childhood in Canada and later attended international school in South Korea, developing strong English fluency. She trained under JYP after an earlier successful audition path did not immediately become a trainee contract because of family concerns.

Her background was more vocal than dance-centered. In a group famous for punishing choreography, that difference became both her contribution and the unfair standard used against her. She brought a softer, more rounded tone that kept ITZY songs from becoming five versions of the same attack.

Road to ITZY

Lia debuted as ITZY’s main vocalist. “DALLA DALLA” required her to sing inside a performance system moving at full speed, and early public discussion often treated dance comparison as if every member had been hired for the same specialty. The group needed contrast; audiences sometimes punished her for providing it.

Career and era map

Lia debuted with ITZY in February 2019 through “DALLA DALLA.” The group’s early run—“ICY,” “WANNABE,” “Not Shy,” and “LOCO”—made athletic choreography and self-confidence their public language. Later eras tested darker production, brighter pop, Japanese releases, solo tracks, and what the group sounded like after the initial explosion became history.

Her warm timbre became especially valuable in melodic songs, pre-choruses, OST work, and tracks such as “Bet on Me” and “Imaginary Friend.” In 2023, JYP announced a health-related hiatus. ITZY promoted Born to Be as four while Lia focused on treatment and recovery. She returned to group activity in 2024, first through fan-facing communication and then new music.
