RESCENE’s debut announcement sold five fresh faces. The résumé underneath already contained two survival shows, one near miss, and a virtual-idol connection nobody explains in the short version.
Minami came painfully close before RESCENE
Minami competed on MBC’s My Teenage Girl in 2021. She finished at No. 13. That is the kind of ranking that looks respectable in a biography and feels terrible when the debut lineup is close enough to see.
She returned to Japan, kept training, and eventually moved toward Korea again after watching TWICE at Tokyo Dome reinforced the idea that K-pop was where she wanted to be. By the time THE MUZE revealed her on February 16, 2024, she was not an anonymous trainee. Survival-show viewers already knew the face, and some had been waiting to see whether the near miss would become a second chance.
Zena had the stranger pre-debut file
Zena competed on Channel A’s Stars Awakening in 2022 and was eliminated in episode seven. She also worked as a visual model connected to the virtual group MAVE: while still in middle school.
That MAVE: detail deserves a pause. Zena was not secretly a digital member, and this is not a conspiracy about somebody living inside a rendering computer. Visual models can provide reference material for virtual performers. It does mean her pre-debut path crossed one of K-pop’s experiments with fully virtual presentation before she debuted in a very human five-member group.
THE MUZE built its first girl group around people with scars
RESCENE was THE MUZE Entertainment’s first girl group. That could have produced a lineup chosen entirely for clean visuals and wishful thinking. Instead, two members arrived with public rejection already attached to their names. Woni had trained with the company since 2022. May had reportedly declined an earlier opportunity connected to tripleS. The group was new. The waiting was not.
This matters because RESCENE’s later underdog story is sometimes flattened into “cute girls went viral.” The viral moment worked because the members had already survived years of being almost visible. When Minami finally became the woman yelling “Geoje, yaho!” at the entire country, she had already learned what it felt like to place thirteenth and disappear from the edit.
The useful fandom tea
Minami: survival-show finalist, Japanese trainee, later viral gyaru chaos agent.
Zena: survival-show contestant, MAVE: visual-model connection, future visual center and accidental spoiler fairy.
The lesson: a debut page is the beginning of the group. It is rarely the beginning of the girls.
