What happened
Nyoman Ayu Carmenita debuted as Carmen in Hearts2Hearts on February 24, 2025. The Bali-born vocalist became the first Indonesian artist to debut under SM Entertainment. That is a real company first, not achievement inflation built from an oddly specific search filter.
SM unveiled the group through the “Chase Your Choice” rollout and released The Chase on debut day. Korean and Indonesian reporting immediately centered Carmen’s nationality because SM’s girl-group history—S.E.S., Girls’ Generation, f(x), Red Velvet and aespa—had never included an Indonesian member.
The timeline did not stop at a headline
Hearts2Hearts earned a music-show win fifteen days after debut, released “STYLE” in June, expanded through Focus, and reached a larger public breakthrough with “RUDE!” in 2026. Carmen’s warm tone became easier to identify as the songs moved away from the blended dream atmosphere of “The Chase.”

Why Bali and Indonesia matter here
Indonesia is one of K-pop’s largest and most active fan markets, but audience size and idol representation are not the same thing. Carmen’s debut put an Indonesian trainee inside one of the industry’s most historically influential companies.
