I love that he does not instantly accept the personality transplant because she made a good meal. His caution gives the romance a pulse. If he believed everything immediately, the rebirth would erase the consequences of her first life. Instead, every warm domestic gesture has to pass through his confusion first.

Lu Cheng being flustered is a public service

This man can command soldiers and handle actual danger. Shen Nian leans close, says something affectionate, and suddenly Officer Lu is operating without a map.

He wants to believe her so badly that it makes his restraint sweeter. He is not cold. He is terrified of trusting the happiness and having it disappear. That quiet fear sits underneath the funny moments, even when I am laughing because he looks ready to send a bowl of soup for laboratory testing.

Why breakfast matters

The novel uses ordinary care as proof. Shen Nian cannot return Lu Cheng’s first life to him. She can notice what he likes. She can cook. She can prepare his things. She can support his career and stop treating his devotion like furniture.

None of those acts are grand. That is why they work. The fire told Shen Nian he would die for her. Breakfast begins teaching Lu Cheng that she might finally choose to live with him.

My reaction: Sir, the food is probably safe. Your emotional stability is not. Please eat while it is warm and continue staring at your wife like she has been replaced by an affectionate government agent.
