Morgenes Says Books Are Magic—and Traps
Sir, you cannot describe literacy as controlled time travel with teeth and then expect the fourteen-year-old not to ask about the evil wizard upstairs.
The moment
A copying lesson opens a door bigger than spectacle
Simon is disappointed because apprenticeship looks like ink, mistakes, repetition, and a Nabbanai exercise instead of fireballs. Morgenes answers by refusing the premise that books are the boring alternative to magic. A book lets a dead person speak across time, carries thought beyond one life, and changes the person willing to enter it.
Then comes the warning: books are traps too. The same door that preserves knowledge can catch the reader, distort the world, or invite something through. Pryrates becomes the negative example not because he knows too much, but because he opens doors without fear of what his appetite may answer.
Why it hits
The series tells us how to read the series
This is one of those scenes that quietly hands over the operating manual. Memory is power, but preservation is not innocence. Curiosity is necessary, but curiosity without ethics becomes Pryrates. The lesson governs manuscripts, prophecy, dreams, Witnesses, oral testimony, and every archive the story will later ask us to trust.
It also validates Simon’s actual gift. He is not the strongest, most disciplined, or most courtly boy in the Hayholt. He notices, remembers, asks, and connects. Morgenes is teaching him that attention can become a form of action if he accepts the work that makes it reliable.
Aftershock
The trap is not a reason to close the book
Morgenes does not respond to danger by praising ignorance. That would be easier and completely useless. The moral distinction is custody, purpose, fear, and responsibility. Who opens the door? Why? Who pays if the opening goes wrong?
Which is also why the scene hurts later. Morgenes dies using the power whose cost he explained. His lessons survive because he distributed them through Simon, manuscripts, birds, and friends instead of making himself the only safe container. The book was magic. The trap was believing the teacher could remain forever.
