JYP Said Gunil Left Xdinary Heroes by Mutual Agreement. His Lawyer Said He Did Not.
JYP Entertainment announced Gunil’s removal from Xdinary Heroes like the agreement had already been signed, sealed and filed under “unfortunate but settled.” Seven days later, Gunil’s lawyer said he never voluntarily left and never agreed to terminate his contract. That is not a tiny translation wobble. Those are two different versions of who made the decision.

Tea file: August 11 to August 20, 2026
Status: Gunil is no longer promoting with Xdinary Heroes; JYP and Gunil publicly disagree about whether the contract termination was mutual
Receipts level: Official company announcement, Gunil’s personal message, attorney statement and documented schedule cancellations
Who: Gunil · Xdinary Heroes
What happened
On August 11, social-media posts from a person claiming to be Gunil’s former partner circulated private messages and audio. The posts alleged that Gunil had spoken harshly about intrusive fans and made negative comments involving other members. Some audio was later acknowledged as real by Gunil, but that does not turn every caption, interpretation or anonymous allegation packaged around it into a confirmed fact. A leaked private conversation is evidence of the words that can be authenticated. It is not automatic proof of every motive strangers attach to those words.
JYP announced on August 13 that the company recognized the gravity of the situation, had discussed the matter with Gunil and decided team activities could not continue. The company said the exclusive contract ended by mutual agreement. Gunil was removed from Xdinary Heroes immediately, and JYP said the band would continue with five members. The language was final enough to make a door slam sound polite.
Gunil then posted a personal message apologizing for inappropriate remarks and for hurting fans and the members. He said he had wanted to protect the six-member band but accepted the company’s decision. That message read like a painful goodbye, but it still did not explain the contract mechanics or confirm every rumor traveling beside the authenticated audio.
Then the word “mutual” broke
On August 20, attorney Sung Jae-hwan issued a statement on Gunil’s behalf disputing JYP’s account. The lawyer said Gunil did not voluntarily withdraw, did not agree to contract termination and did not believe valid grounds for termination existed. The statement said Gunil wanted discussions with the company while contesting parts of the accusations circulated online.
That response changes the Tea. The question is no longer limited to whether Gunil said ugly things in a private moment after dealing with invasive behavior. The documented dispute now includes authority: did JYP and Gunil actually reach the mutual agreement JYP announced, or did the company make a unilateral decision and describe it as mutual before Gunil had a realistic way to challenge the language?
Fans do not need access to a confidential contract to notice the contradiction. “We mutually agreed” and “I never agreed” cannot both describe the same decision accurately. Maybe later negotiations resolve the dispute. Maybe a court or settlement defines the exit. As of September 1, the public record contains two incompatible claims, and any honest Tea file has to keep both on the page.

What is not confirmed
The public record does not prove every allegation bundled into the original social posts. It does not establish the full context of every recording, what internal conversations occurred, which contract clause JYP relied upon or whether the dispute will become formal litigation. It also does not give fans permission to diagnose the relationship, assign crimes that were never charged or treat every anonymous update as a deposition.
There is enough verified material to criticize the remarks Gunil admitted without pretending the internet completed a forensic investigation in forty-eight hours. There is also enough contradiction to question JYP’s process without declaring Gunil innocent of everything anybody ever alleged. Adults can hold two receipts at once. Fandom will survive the strain.
The company moved faster than the facts
JYP’s decision arrived roughly two days after the posts began spreading. Fast action can protect members, staff and fans when a situation is genuinely dangerous. Fast action can also become reputation management wearing a moral cape. The problem is not that companies should wait forever. The problem is that “gravity of the situation” tells the public almost nothing while allowing the company to borrow the emotional weight of facts it refuses to name.
That wording makes the audience imagine the worst possible private file. Then “mutual agreement” closes the door before anyone asks how the decision was reached. When the artist’s lawyer disputes the basic noun one week later, the neat company version starts looking less like clarity and more like control of the first headline.
A band does not lose only a face in the formation
Gunil was Xdinary Heroes’ leader and drummer. Removing a drummer changes the physical architecture of a band. A dance group can redistribute lines and formations, although that process is still difficult. A working band has arrangements built around touch, timing, cues and the way one player pushes or leaves space. The remaining five members now carry personal shock, public scrutiny and an immediate musical problem at the same time.
The canceled appearances and fan meeting show that the consequence was not contained to one profile deletion. Fans lost events. Promoters changed plans. Staff lost work already prepared. The five members had to reconsider how and when to stand in public. Gunil lost the group identity he helped build. Calling the matter settled did not settle any of those practical costs.
RaeRae take
Gunil should answer for the words he acknowledged. I am not interested in pretending that frustration gives anybody a free pass to say whatever lands in the microphone. I am equally uninterested in letting a corporation use “mutual” as decorative ribbon when the other party’s lawyer says there was no agreement. Accountability cannot depend on everyone accepting the company’s first press release as sacred text.
The clean version fans were handed lasted one week. JYP said discussion produced a mutual exit. Gunil’s legal representative said discussion did not produce consent. That conflict is the story now. The leaked messages started the fire, but the contract language determines who controlled the door while everybody was trying to get out.
What happens next
The next meaningful update is not another anonymous thread promising additional screenshots. It is a direct JYP response to the attorney’s claim, a settlement notice, a formal legal filing or a documented change in Gunil’s professional status. Xdinary Heroes’ next credited release and live configuration will also show how the five-member chapter works musically rather than merely on a revised profile page.
Until one of those things happens, the honest status remains uncomfortable: Gunil is out of the active band, JYP says the contract ended mutually, and Gunil’s side says it did not. Anyone flattening that into a simple “he chose to leave” or “JYP fired him for nothing” is throwing away half the receipts because certainty feels better in a quote tweet.
Bottom line: Gunil’s admitted remarks deserve criticism. JYP’s disputed description of the termination deserves scrutiny. Xdinary Heroes and its fans deserved a process that did not turn a two-day scandal into a permanent lineup change and then require a lawyer to explain that the word “mutual” was still under argument.
