Early life and training

Yeji grew up in Jeonju and trained for several years under JYP Entertainment. Before debut, she appeared on SBS’s survival program The Fan in 2018, where her dancing and distinctive eyes made her recognizable even before ITZY had a public name.

Her training covered both vocals and performance. That balance matters because “main dancer” labels can trap women into being treated as moving scenery. Yeji’s voice – bright, edged, and stable under choreography – became part of ITZY’s sound from the beginning.

Road to ITZY

Yeji was introduced as ITZY’s leader and eldest member. The position was decided inside a group where several members had long training histories, so leadership was never just “oldest equals boss.” Her job became emotional pacing: knowing when to push, when to translate company language into human language, and when to let another member control the room.

Career and era map

Yeji debuted with ITZY in February 2019 through “DALLA DALLA.” The group’s early run – “ICY,” “WANNABE,” “Not Shy,” and “LOCO” – made athletic choreography and self-confidence their public language. Fans associate Yeji with a cat or “light fury” image because of her eyes, while official and behind-the-scenes content shows a much softer, more awkward humor. She is also known for leadership that feels attentive rather than ceremonial.
