What is Love?: TWICE Studied the Movies and Still Had Questions After the Credits

TWICE raided the movie shelf for answers, reenacted everybody else’s great romances and discovered that knowing every trope does not tell you what love feels like when it finally happens to you.

First watch: cinema class became a crush emergency

The video understands that many people learn the grammar of romance before they experience the event. Movies teach the look across the room, the dramatic rescue, the impossible timing and the kiss that resolves an entire personality. TWICE consume those images with the enthusiasm of students who have memorized every example and still cannot answer the exam question.

That gap is the comedy and the ache. The members can reproduce a scene, borrow a costume and hit the emotional mark for the camera. None of that guarantees recognition when real love arrives without a soundtrack. The MV keeps asking whether fantasy prepares the heart or simply gives confusion better lighting.

The production sounds curious instead of desperate

Bright percussion, buoyant melodic movement and a chorus built around a question keep the track open. The song does not sound heartbroken about inexperience. It sounds impatient, fascinated and slightly offended that everybody else seems to know a secret. That emotional choice gives youthful pop dignity without pretending youth is uncomplicated.

The arrangement also uses TWICE’s vocal colors as different forms of curiosity. Some lines sound dreamy, some teasing and others more urgent. The question repeats, but the voices prevent it from becoming one emotional temperature. Nine people can want the same answer for nine different reasons.

Lyrics and meaning: a question can be more honest than a promise

The lyric refuses to fake expertise. Rather than announcing an eternal bond, it asks how love feels, when it arrives and whether stories have described it accurately. That uncertainty is not immaturity. Adults spend entire relationships discovering that the vocabulary they inherited does not automatically explain the person in front of them.

The song’s deeper pleasure is that wanting knowledge becomes its own awakening. The members are already moved by the possibility, already comparing evidence and already imagining how their lives might change. Love is absent as a confirmed person but present as an organizing curiosity. The question has begun rearranging the room.

The movie references are costumes and arguments

The recreated scenes work because they are recognizable even when a viewer cannot name every source. Genre does the signaling: dangerous elegance, slapstick pursuit, supernatural devotion, glamorous performance and private tenderness. Each miniature asks what kind of love the member has been taught to expect.

Casting the members across masculine and feminine roles makes the film more playful than a simple parade of heroines waiting for men. TWICE perform the whole romantic machine. They become pursuer, pursued, fantasy and witness. The result admits that pop fandom has always enjoyed women acting out every side of a story, even when official explanations remain coy.

Comedy keeps the nostalgia from becoming homework

A reference-heavy MV can turn into a quiz where recognition is treated as intelligence. “What is Love?” avoids that trap through physical comedy and member timing. A scene remains funny even when the exact movie title is unknown. The joke belongs to the frame, not only to viewers carrying the correct list.

The members commit without acting embarrassed by sweetness. That matters. Irony can protect performers from looking earnest, but too much irony leaves nothing to care about. TWICE let the parody stay affectionate. They are laughing with the desire to know, not mocking anybody for having it.

Choreography answers with shape, not certainty

The point movement makes the title easy to recognize and gives the questioning hook a physical punctuation. Hands frame faces, bodies turn toward imagined answers and formations keep moving as if another angle might finally reveal the definition. The dance does not solve the lyric; it organizes the searching.

Watch how members outside center react. Their expressions make the choreography feel social, like friends comparing romantic theories between classes. That background life is one of TWICE’s strongest skills. Precision is present, but precision never becomes an excuse to erase personality.

Nine performances keep the question from becoming one-note

The members do not all play curiosity the same way. Some approach the fantasy with open excitement, some with comic skepticism and some with a quieter longing that makes the bright hook briefly feel private. Those differences matter more than assigning a permanent personality label to each woman.

The camera is strongest when it lets one interpretation pass directly into another. Love can look ridiculous, glamorous, frightening and completely worth investigating within the same chorus. Nine performers give the question room to contradict itself, which is closer to real emotional experience than one polished answer would be.

Where the fantasy needs one cracked frame

The video is so delightful at reproducing romance that its critique remains gentle. I wanted one sequence where a beloved trope visibly fails the person trying to use it. Let the perfect gesture land awkwardly. Let the soundtrack swell while the imagined partner misses the cue. A broken reference would sharpen the question.

The song could also use a bridge with more emotional exposure. The arrangement stays buoyant because buoyancy is the concept, but one quieter confession would let curiosity brush against fear. Asking what love is can also mean asking what it might cost. TWICE were capable of carrying that shadow without losing the color.

What changed every time I replayed it

The first replay was a reference hunt. The second belonged to the members playing multiple roles and the ways that gendered expectations became flexible inside the joke. By the third, the unanswered question felt more important than any individual movie. The MV is not a list of solutions; it is evidence that stories multiply the possibilities.

Audio-only, the hook survives because the melody turns curiosity into momentum. Muted, the video remains readable through costume, blocking and expression. Together, the two halves make the exact official MV its own object. A dance version can prove formations, but only this film shows TWICE studying romance like an archive that keeps producing contradictory footnotes.

RaeRae verdict

“What is Love?” remains one of TWICE’s smartest bright concepts because it treats innocence as active inquiry, not empty-headed waiting. The women perform the stories, test the poses and keep asking for evidence. Curiosity becomes the engine of the song instead of a weakness the ending needs to cure.

I wanted one trope to collapse and one quieter bridge to admit that love can frighten the person seeking it. Still, the question lasts beyond the candy colors. Knowing every famous scene does not make a person ready. Sometimes the honest beginning is admitting the movies gave you vocabulary and absolutely no instructions.

Bottom line

TWICE watched the movies, learned every romantic cue and still left the theater asking the right question. “What is Love?” works because the fantasy is joyful, but the uncertainty underneath it is real.
