Westerns & the Frontier
This Library has been treated as a Regency shelf. It is not entirely one. Nine of these books are set in Texas, Wyoming, Montana and the Washington Territory, and they were only visible once the ballroom books were cleared away.
Every hub built for this Library so far has been Regency England: dukes, seasons, the ton, the marriage market. That was a reasonable reading of a shelf where the great majority of titles are exactly that. But once the large series were pulled out into their own pages, what was left was not a random scatter of leftovers. Nine of the remaining titles turned out to share a setting, a period and a set of preoccupations, and they belong together.
These are American frontier romances. Texas ranches, Wyoming towns, the Montana territory. The social machinery of the Regency books (inheritance, rank, reputation, the season) is simply absent, and something else stands in its place: distance, scarcity, and the practical problem of two strangers having to make a household work.
Why it matters for the Library. A reader who liked these did not necessarily like them for the same reasons they liked the Bridgertons. Filing them all under one heading obscures that. This hub exists so the frontier books are findable as a group.
The largest holding
Jodi Thomas, three books, two Texas series
The only author on this shelf who is here for the West rather than for England.
Whispering Mountain #6Wild Texas RoseThe Whispering Mountain books follow the McMurray family and their ranch in nineteenth-century Texas, a remote place that functions in the series as the thing everyone is either defending or trying to reach.
Wife Lottery #3A Texan’s LuckThe premise the series is named for: fathers arranging wives for their sons by lottery. A blunt piece of frontier pragmatism, and the books are about what two people do afterwards.
Wife Lottery #4The Texan’s RewardThe fourth of that run, and the second of the pair on this shelf.

The recurring shape
Married first, acquainted afterwards
Three of the six authors here are working the same structure from different angles, and it is the frontier’s answer to the Regency’s compromising-in-a-garden: a marriage contracted between people who have not met, which then has to be made real.
Jo Goodman · Bitter SpringsIn Want of a WifeBitter Springs, Wyoming, 1891. Jane Middlebourne leaves a hard life in New York to marry a rancher she has never met. The marriage settles slowly and then his criminal brothers arrive wanting him for a bank robbery, with her as the leverage.
Kit Morgan · Holiday Mail Order Brides #3His Forever ValentineA comic series set in a fictional town in the Washington Territory around 1870, running a year of holidays and seven brides, most of them sent for by parents whose sons had no idea.
Caroline Clemmons · Kincaids #1The Most Unsuitable WifeThe opening of a Texas family saga set in the late 1800s. First of five in that sequence; the only one here.
Numbering conflict. This Library records In Want of a Wife as Bitter Springs #2. The standard listings place it at #3. As with the Last Man Standing conflict on the Victoria Alexander hub, the shelf record has been left alone and the disagreement stated rather than resolved from a distance.
The rest
Three more
Julie Garwood · Clayborne Brides #1For the RosesThe best-known book on this page by some margin, and the opening of Garwood’s American sequence. Garwood is otherwise represented on this shelf not at all, which makes this a single deliberate visit.
Linda Lael Miller · Stone Creek #3The RustlerPart of Miller’s historical western sequence.
Linda Lael Miller · Montana CreedsThe Creed LegacyAlso Miller, also the West, but the Creeds books are set in the present day rather than the nineteenth century. Included here because the setting and preoccupations belong with this group, with the period difference flagged rather than smoothed over.
Coverage
What this hub is and is not
None of these six authors has enough on the shelf to carry a series hub, and several are single visits. Grouping them by setting rather than by author or series is the only structure that makes them findable, and it surfaces a real fact about the Library that per-series pages had hidden.
Nothing here has been read directly. Settings, periods and series premises come from publisher listings, author sites and standard bibliographies, cross-checked across sources and summarized rather than quoted. Where a book’s period differs from the group, as with the Montana Creeds title, that is stated rather than glossed.
Covers: two of nine retrievable. Open Library returns blank placeholders for the rest, the Google Books service has been over its daily quota from this address all session, and the Barnes & Noble image host refuses direct requests.
Compiled from the shelf record, publisher listings, author sites and standard series bibliographies, summarized rather than quoted. Covers are the publishers’ own. No part of these novels has been read directly for this page.
