The premise

What the school is actually for

Most Regency series are held together by a family. This one is held together by an institution with a grievance. Mrs Harris’s School for Young Ladies takes in heiresses and teaches them, alongside the expected accomplishments, how to recognize a fortune hunter before he has their money and their name.

The proposition underneath it is more radical than the setting suggests: the school’s position is that a woman does not have to marry at all unless she finds someone genuinely worth it. Lessons on securing a loving and passionate husband are on the curriculum, but they are framed as a choice a woman makes with full information rather than a fate she is prepared for.

Why this works as a series: six books, six different women, one place that has taught all of them the same thing. The connective tissue is an argument rather than a surname, which is rarer and holds up better across a long run.

The headmistress

Charlotte Harris, and Cousin Michael

Charlotte was an heiress herself. She eloped with a dashing soldier called Jimmy Harris, who spent her entire inheritance and then got himself killed in a duel. Everything the school teaches, she learned the expensive way, and she founded it so that other young women would not have to.

There is a second thread running quietly under all six books. The school has an anonymous benefactor, a man Charlotte knows only as “Cousin Michael,” with whom she corresponds and has never met. She also, years ago, wronged a man in an impulsive act she has regretted ever since.

Those two facts are the same fact, and the series does not resolve it until the last book, which is Charlotte’s own.

Coverage

Where this sits

All six novels and the anthology are on the shelf, which is why this series got a hub. A series page is only worth building when the run is complete enough that the reading order is actually usable.

Individual book hubs are not written yet. This is a series hub, covering the frame, the headmistress and the reading order. The per-book hubs, with their own characters, arcs and reacts, come later. Nothing in these novels has been read directly: the school’s premise, Charlotte’s history and the Cousin Michael thread come from the publisher’s description and the series bibliography.

Sabrina Jeffries

Fifteen of her books are on this shelf, which makes her the third most represented author here after Julia Quinn and Stephanie Laurens. Besides this series there are the Hellions of Halstead Hall and the Duke’s Men, both of which are also partly or wholly present.

Cover images are the publishers’ official covers, used to identify the editions discussed. Book 4’s cover is the largest edition available from either source and is lower resolution than the rest.
